WHY CAHN'S CRITICS ACCUSE HIM OF BEING IN IT FOR THE MONEY
- Profiting from Fear and Sensationalism: Critics argue Cahn leverages current events and speculative, often unfulfilled, prophecies to create alarm among his followers. This atmosphere of impending judgment is described as a strategy to sell books and other merchandise, with some critics labeling him "Jonathan Con Man".
- Book Sales and "Novel" Format: Cahn's books, which often deal with "hidden mysteries" and prophetic patterns, are a primary source of income. Some critics point out the books are labeled as "novels" (fiction), which they view as a way to push speculative interpretations while providing a defense against charges of false prophecy.
- "Self-Made Businessman" Persona: Some critics describe Cahn not as a genuine spiritual leader, but as a "self-made businessman with the gentile Christians for his target market".
- Denial of Prosperity Gospel, but Perceived Wealth: While Cahn himself has explicitly spoken against the prosperity gospel, some former attendees of his worship center claim he "basks in his wealth and doesn't care to help long-time visitors who are struggling," which contributes to perceptions of financial self-interest.
- Repetitive Content to Fill Books: A common critique of his writing style is that he repeats information multiple times across a book to stretch a concept that could be a single chapter into an entire novel, which critics view as a tactic to sell more books.
DONALD STAMPS IN THE LIFE STUDY BIBLE PAGE 1,995 WROTE THE FOLLOWING:
"THE FALSE PROPHETS/TEACHERS WILL COMMERCIALIZE THE GOSPEL, BEING EXPERTS IN GREED AND IN GETTING MONEY FROM BELIEVERS TO ENHANCE THEIR MINISTRIES AND AFFLUENT LIFESTYLES. BELIEVERS MUST BE AWARE THAT ONE OF THE CHIEF METHODS OF FALSE MINISTERS IS TO USE FEIGNED WORDS TO TELL IMPRESSIVE STORIES THAT ARE NOT TRUE , OR TO GIVE EXAGGERATED STATISTICS IN ORDER TO INSPIRE GOD'S PEOPLE TO GIVE MONEY. THEY GLORIFY THEMSELVES AND ENHANCE THEIR MINISTRIES WITH THESE FABRICATED STORIES (cf 2nd Corinthians 2:17). THUS, THE UNWARY AND SINCERE CHILD OF GOD BECOMES AN OBJECT OF EXPLOITATION. BECAUSE THESE MINISTERS DEFILE GOD'S TRUTH AND PEOPLE WITH GREED AND DECEIT, THEY ARE ASSIGNED TO ETERNAL DOOM AND DESTRUCTION".

The following excerpts are taken from the book "Debunking Jonathan Cahn" by Dr. Samuel James the founder of Advanced Apologetics Research:
Jonathan Cahn was born into a reformed Jewish family, a branch of Judaism that, while honoring tradition, often embraces a more liberal and modern interpretation of Jewish Law and life. His early years were not marked by intense religious fervor or strict observance(page6).
Having experienced a dramatic spiritual conversion, Cahn's path diverged from that of many Christian leaders. He did not pursue formal theological training in traditional seminaries or academic institutions. Instead his education in religious matters became a testament to self study, deep immersion in biblical texts, and mentorship within the Messianic community. This unconventional academic background is a significant milestone, as it profoundly shaped his interpretive methodology. Free from the constraints of established theological paradigms or rigorous exegetical training often emphasized in seminaries, Cahn developed a distinctive approach to scripture. He delved into the Hebrew Bible with an intense focus on identifying patterns, connections, and hidden meanings(a concept he often aligns with the Jewish interpretive method of midrash or the idea of sod, meaning secret or mystery). This unencumbered exploration allowed him to forge unique links between ancient Israel's history and contemporary global events, a practice that would later become a hallmark of his controversial "HARBINGER" concept (pages 7-8).
Jonathan Cahn's teachings, while sharing a common foundation with orthodox Christianity, diverge significantly in their specific applications and interpretive methodologies. His unique way of connecting ancient Jewish practices and prophecies to modern American events, his claims of unlocking hidden ANCIENT MYSTERIES, and his intense focus on precise national judgment patterns all represent significant departures from widely accepted theological and hermeneutical norms. Recognizing these divergences is essential for Christians to critically evaluate his work and ensure their understanding of God's word remains grounded in sound doctrine and responsible interpretation (page 86).
Whether Jonathan Cahn is considered "biblically sound" with his newest release "THE AVATAR" or any of his previous books is a subject of significant debate within Christian circles, with opinions often falling on opposite ends of the spectrum. His teachings are highly polarizing, and there is no consensus on the matter. Here are a few points to consider:
1) Arguments that Cahn is Not Biblically Sound
Critics, including many discernment ministries and biblical scholars, argue that Cahn's teachings contain significant theological errors and distortions of Scripture.
2) Faulty Hermeneutics and Contextual Interpretation: A primary criticism is that Cahn takes Old Testament passages, specifically those directed at ancient Israel and applies them directly to modern-day America, often ignoring the original historical and literary context ( this is known as eisegesis).
3) Speculative Prophecy and "Code-Busting": Critics contend that Cahn treats the Bible as a mystical codebook containing secret patterns and hidden mysteries to predict modern events. This approach is seen as relying on sensationalism and extra-biblical revelations rather than the clear teaching of the Bible.
Mr. Cahn's HERMENUETICS is based on a MYSTICAL METHOD of interpreting scripture. What is Mystical Hermenuetics? This interpretative method is one that views the scriptures as having shades of meaning in addition to a strict grammatical literal interpretation. Jewish Mystics frequently see the inspired text of the Hebrew Scriptures as having deeper meanings intended by God that may not have been known or realized by the BIBLICAL AUTHORS themselves! It is nothing more than seeing additional interpretations of a passage of scripture besides it's obvious biblical meanings.
A mystical hermenuetic method is often identified as EISEGESIS. It is a fundamental Jewsish method that has made it's way into all kinds of Rabbinical writings including the ZOHAR/KABBALAH.
Another variant of Mystical hermenuetics is Midrashic interpretation, since it is also characterized by finding deeper biblical meanings in the Bible unknown to the original biblical authors. New Age Rabbinical Sages manufactured fantasy tales embroidered around biblical narratives, patriarchs, and events and used them in their attempt to discern the hidden meaning of scripture.
A BRIEF HISTORY CONCERNING THE EVOLUTION OF RABBINICAL MYSTICAL HERMENUETICS
The School of Akiva taught that since Elohim is all knowing, when He speaks, every word and every letter is divinely inspired and has some implication. Akiva’s school therefore sought and found hidden meanings in the text. The school of Ishmael countered this approach and claimed that when Elohim speaks to man He speaks as a man would to another man, without buried hidden meanings. These two schools were ultimately reconciled when it was determined that Ishmael’s approach was true on the literal and implied levels of understanding while Akiva’s approach held true on the allegorical and mystical levels of understanding. The literal and implied meanings of the text could be derived from accepting the text as if a man were speaking to another man while the allegorical and mystical meanings could be derived by recognizing that the text expressed the infinite mind of Elohim with meaning buried in every word and letter. One of Rabbi Akiva's most famous students is Rabbi Shimon Ben Yohai author of the Zohar....Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai - Jewish History.
4) America as a "New Israel": A foundational element of Cahn's work is the notion that America holds a special, covenantal relationship with God akin to ancient Israel. Opponents argue that the New Testament is clear that God's redemptive plan is now centered on the Church, not any single modern nation.
5) Inconsistent Predictive Patterns: Critics point out that Cahn's past/present numerous predictions about economic collapses, political events, and divine judgments have not always come to pass as he suggested, which they argue calls into question the legitimacy of his prophetic insights.
6) Despite Mr. Cahn's claims of calling himself a Rabbi, he actually in the academic sense is not. Mr. Cahn has a bachelor's degree in History from Purchase University which is affiliated with SUNY in New York (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jonathan_Cahn). He never has claimed attending a Rabbinical College. He never has provided any documentation/degree from any Jewish Theological Seminary as proof that he has successfully completed the Academic Disciplines or requirements to be officially ordained as a Rabbi(SMICHA).
Furthermore, he has never provided any evidence that he completed an internship under a licensed Rabbi before being officially ordained as one. The following is the basic academic requirements for becoming a Rabbi: You'll need lots and lots of schooling to become a rabbi. Typically, it takes five years to get a Master's degree in rabbinical studies. You need to be an expert in the Hebrew language, Jewish law, Jewish history, the Bible, the Talmud, liturgy, Jewish teaching methods, counseling, Jewish literature, ethics, Israel, Jewish philosophy, and pretty much all things Jewish. Qualifications - Rabbi (https://www.shmoop.com/careers/rabbi/qualifications.
The following is an excerpt taken from David H. Stern's Jewish N.T. commentary and I quote:
" A MESSIANIC JEWISH CONGREGATIONAL LEADER WHO ACCEPTS THE TITLE "RABBI" WITHOUT HAVING TRAINING ADEQUATE TO QUALIFY HIM AS A RABBI IN A NON-MESSIANIC JEWISH SETTING IS ACCEPTING HONOR WHICH HE HAS NOT EARNED AND TO WHICH HE IS NOT ENTITLED; AND THIS DOES VIOLATE YESHUA'S(JESUS) INJUNCTION UNDER MATHEW 23:8-10. SHOULD A MESSIANIC RABBI HAVE A MIKHAH(ORDINATION)? IF SO , SHOULD IT BE MESSIANIC OR NON-MESSIANIC? IF MESSIANIC, WHO IS QUALIFIED TO GRANT IT? MESSIANIC JUDAISM AT PRESENT HAS VERY FEW ORDAINED RABBIS AND NO ACCREDITING AGENCY. AT PRESENT, IN ORDER NOT TO EMBARASS THE MESSIANIC JEWISH MOVEMENT, I URGE LEADERS WITHOUT RABBINIC TRAINING TO RESIST CALLING THEMSELVES RABBIS" pages 68-69 end of quote.
7) In conclusion, Cahn's claims of unlocking profound new mysteries or specific templates can inadvertently imply that the existing Scriptures is insufficient or unclear without his so called unique prophetic insights. His emphasis often appears to be on finding precise, hidden patterns and timing, which overshadows the primary purpose of biblical prophecy which is a call to repentance and to reveal God's character. Be cautious of interpretations that rely on intricate hidden codes, numerology, or complex, speculative connections not explicitly taught in Scripture.
