I have in my possession a copy of the letter written by Pontius Pilate to Tiberius Caesar, Emperor of Rome. This Historic letter written by Pontius Pilate to Tiberius Caesar Letter is from the "Archko Volume" containing manuscripts, in Constantinople, and the Records of the Senatorial Docket, taken from the Library at Rome, Translated by Drs. McIntosh and Twyman of the Antiquerian Lodge, Genoa, Italy. This has been checked and is in accord with the copy of the original lodged in the British Museum, which has verified the accuracy of the transcription. Verified in November, 1935. TIBERIUS CAESAR-EMPEROR OF ROME-NOBLE SOVEREIGN GREETING:
The events of the last few days in my providence have been of such a character that I will give the details in full as they occurred, as I should not be surprised if, in the course of, time, they may change the destiny of our nation, for it seems of late that all the gods have ceased to be propitous. I am almost ready to say, Cursed be the day that I succeeded Vallerius Falceus in the government of Judea; for since then my life has been one of continual uneasiness and distress.


On my arrival at Jerusalem I took possession of the Praetorium, and ordered a splendid feast to be prepared, to which I invited the Tetrarch of Galilee, with the high priest and his officers. At the appointed hour no guest appeared. This I considered an insult offered my dignity, and the whole government which I represent. A few days later, the high priest designed to pay me a visit. His deportment was grave and deceitful. He pretended that his religion forbade him and his attendants to sit at the table of the Romans, and eat and offer libations with them, but this was only a sanctimonious seeming, for his very countenance betrayed his hypocrisy. Although I thought it expedient to accept his excuse, from that moment I was convinced that the conquered had declared themselves the enemy of the conquerors; and I would warn the Romans to beware of the high Priests of this country. They would betray their own mother to gain office and a luxurious living. It seems to me that, of conquered cities, Jerusalem is the most difficult to govern. So turbulent are the people that I live in momentary dread of an insurrection. I have not soldiers sufficient to suppress it. I had only one centurion and a hundred men at my command. I requested a reinforcement from the perfect of Syria, who informed me that he had scarcely troops sufficient to defend his own province. An insatiate thirst for conquest to extend our empire beyond the means of defending it, I fear, will be the cause of the final overthrow of our whole government. I lived secluded from the masses, for I do not know what those priests might influence the rabble to do; yet I endeavored to ascertain, as far as I could, the mind and standing of the people.


I WAS TOLD IT WAS JESUS
Among the various rumors that came to my ears there was one in particular that attracted my attention. A young man, it was said, appeared in Galiee preaching with a noble unction a new law in the name of God who had sent him. At first I was apprehensive that his design was to stir up the people against the Romans, but my fears were soon dispelled. Jesus of Nazareth spoke rather as a friend of the Romans than of the Jews. One day in passing by the place of Siloe, where there was a great concourse of people, I observed in the midst of the group a young man who was leaning against a tree, calmly addressing the multitude. I was told it was Jesus. This I could easily have suspected, so great was the difference between him and those listening to him. His golden-colored hair and beard gave him the appearance of a celestial aspect. He appeared to be about thirty years old. Never have I seen a sweeter or more serene countenance. What a Contrast between him and his hearers, with their black beards and tawny complexion!



Unwilling to interrupt him by my presence, I continued to walk, but signified to my secretary to join the group and listen. My secretary's name is Manlius. He is the grandson of the chief of the conspirators who encamped in Eturia waiting for Cataline. Manlius had been for a long time an inhabitant of Judea, and is well acquainted with the Hebrew language. He was devoted to me, and worthy of my confidence. On entering the Praetorium I found Manlius, who related to me the words Jesus had pronounced at Siloe. Never have I read in the works of the philosophers anything that can compare to the maxims of Jesus. One of the rebellious Jews, so numerous in Jerusalem, having asked Jesus if it was lawful to give tribute to Caesar, he replied: "Render unto Caesar the things that belong to Caesar, and unto God the things that are God's."


I EXTENDED TO HIM MY PROTECTION
It was on account of his sayings that I granted so much liberty to the Nazarene; for it was in my power to have him arrested, and exiled to Pontus; but that would have been contrary to the justice which has always characterized the Roman Government in all its dealings with men; this man was neither seditious nor rebellious; I extended to him my protection, unknown perhaps to himself. He was at liberty to act, to speak, to assemble and address the people, and to choose disciples, unrestrained by any Praetorian mandate. Should it ever happen {May the gods avert the omen!} should it ever happen, I say that the religion of our forefathers will be supplanted by the religion of Jesus, it will be to this noble toleration that Rome shall owe her premature death, while I, miserable wretch, will have been the instrument of what the Jews call Providence, and we call destiny.


This unlimited freedom granted to Jesus provoked the Jews--not the poor, but the rich and powerful. It is true that Jesus was severe on the latter, and this was a political reason, in my opinion, for not restraining the liberty of the Nazarene. "Scribes and Pharisees," he would say to them, "you are a race of vipers; you resemble painted sepulchers; you appear well unto men, but you have death within you." At other times he would sneer at the alms of the rich and proud, telling them that the mite of the poor was more precious in the sight of God. Complaints were daily made at the Praetorium against the insolence of Jesus.
I was even informed that some misfortune would befall him; that it would not be the first time that Jerusalem had stoned those who called themselves prophets; an appeal would be made to Caesar. However, my conduct was approved by the Senate, and I was promised a reinforcement after the termination of the Parthian War.


Being too weak to suppress an insurrection, I resolved upon adopting a measure that promised to restore the tranquility of the city without subjecting the Praetorium to humiliating concession. I wrote to Jesus requesting an interview with him at the Praetorium. He came. You know that in my veins flows the Spanish mixed with Roman blood--as incapable of fear as it is of weak emotion. When the Nazarene made his appearance I was walking in my basilica, and my feet seemed fastened with an iron hand to the marble pavement, and I trembled in every limb as does a guilty culprit, though the Nazarene was as calm as innocence itself. When he came up to me he stopped,and by a signal sign he seemed to say to me, "I am here," though he spoke not a word. For some time I contemplated with admiration and awe this extraordinary type of man--a type unknown to our numerous painters, who have given form and figure to all the gods and the heroes. There was nothing about him that was repelling in his character, yet I felt too awed and tremulous to approach him.


"Jesus," said I unto him at last--and my tongue faltered--"Jesus of Nazareth, for the last three years I have granted you ample freedom of speech; nor do I regret it. Your words are those of a sage--I know not whether you have read Socrates or Plato, but this I know, there is in your discourses a majestic simplicity that elevates you far above those philosophers. The Emperor is informed of it, and I, his humble representative in this country, am glad of having allowed you that liberty of which you are worthy. However. I must not conceal from you that your discourses have raised up against you powerful and inveterate enemies. Nor is this surprising. Socrates had his enemies, and he fell victim of their hatred. Yours are doubly incensed--against you on account of your discourses being so severe upon their conduct; against me on account of the liberty I have afforded you. They even accuse me of being indirectly leagued with you for the purpose of depriving the Hebrews of the little civil power which Rome has left them. My request---I do not say an order---is, that you be more circumspect and moderate in your discourses in the future, and more considerate of them, lest you arouse the pride of your enemies, and they raise against you the stupid populace, and compel me to employ the instruments of law."


The Nazarene calmly replied: "Prince of the earth, your words proceed not from true wisdom. Say to the torrent to stop in the midst of the mountain-gorge: it will uproot the trees of the valley. The torrent will answer you that it obeys the laws of nature and the Creator. God alone knows whither flow the waters of the torrent. Verily I say unto you, before the rose of Sharon blossoms the blood of the just shall be spilt."


"Your blood shall not be spilt," said I, with deep emotion: "you are more precious in my estimation on account of your wisdom than all of the turbulent and proud Pharisees who abuse the freedom granted them by the Romans. They conspire against Caesar, and convert his bounty into fear, impressing the unlearned that Caesar is a tyrant and seeks their ruin. Insolent wretches! they are not aware that the wolf of the Tiber sometimes clothes himself with the skin of sheep to accomplish his wicked designs. I will protect you against them. My Praetorium shall be an asylum both day and night."


"THAT WHICH IS WRITTEN IN THE BOOKS OF THE PROPHETS MUST BE ACCOMPLISHED"
Jesus carelessly shook his head, and said with a grave and divine smile: "When the day shall come there will be no asylums for the son of man, neither in the earth nor under the earth. The asylum of the just is there," pointing to the heavens. "That which is written in the books of the prophets must be accomplished."


"Young man," I answered mildly, "you will oblige me to convert my requests into an order. The safety of the province which has been confided to my care requires it. You must observe more moderation in your discourses. Do not infringe my order. You know the consequences. May happiness attend you. Farewell."


"I CAME NOT TO BRING WAR INTO THE WORLD, BUT PEACE, LOVE AND CHARITY."
"Prince of the earth," replied Jesus. I come not to bring war into the world, but peace, love and charity. I was born the same day on which Augustus Caesar gave peace to the Roman world. Persecutions proceed not from me. I expect it from others, and I will meet it in obedience to the will of my Father, who has shown me the way. Restrain, therefore, your worldly prudence. It is not in your power to arrest the victim at the foot of the tabernacle of expiation."


So saying he disappeared like a bright shadow behind the curtains of the basilica--to my great relief, for I felt a heavy burden on me, of which I could not relieve myself of in his presence.


JESUS APPEARED TO BE ONE OF THOSE GREAT PHILOSOPHERS THAT GREAT NATIONS SOMETIMES PRODUCE
To Herod, who then reigned in Galilee, the enemies of Jesus addressed themselves, to wreak their vengeance on the Nazarene. Had Herod consulted his own inclinations, he would have ordered Jesus immediately put to death; but, though proud of his royal dignity, yet he hesitated to commit an act that might lessen his influence with the Senate, or like me, was afraid of Jesus. But it would never do for a Roman officer to be afraid of a Jew. Previously to this, Herod called on me at the Praetorium, and, on rising to take leave, after some trifling conversation, asked me what was my opinion concerning the Nazarene. I replied that Jesus appeared to me to be one of those great philosophers that great nations sometimes produced; that his doctrines were by no means sacrilegious, and that the intentions of Rome were to leave him to that freedom of speech which was justified by his actions. Herod smiled maliciously, and, saluting me with ironical respect, departed.


CLAMORING FOR THE DEATH OF THE NAZARENE
The great feast of the Jews was approaching, and the intention was to avail themselves of the popular exultation which always manifests itself at the solemnities of the Passover. The city was overflowing with a tumultuous populace, clamoring for the death of the Nazarene. My emissaries informed me that the treasure of the temple had been employed in bribing the people. The danger was pressing. A Roman centurion had been insulted. I wrote to the Perfect of Syria for a hundred foot soldiers and as many cavalry. He declined. I saw myself alone with a handful of veterans in the midst of a rebellious city, too weak to suppress an uprising, and having no choice left but to tolerate it. They had seized upon Jesus, and the seditious rabble, although they had nothing to fear from the Praetorium, believing, as their leaders had told them, that I winked at their sedition, continued vociferating: "Crucify him! Crucify him!"


Three powerful parties had combined together at that time against Jesus. First, the Herodians and the Sadducees, whose seditious conduct seemed to have proceeded from double motives: they hated the Nazarene and were impatient of the Roman yoke. They never forgave me for having entered the holy city with banners that bore the image of the Roman emperor; and although in this instance I had committed a fatal error, yet the sacrilege did not appear less heinous in their eyes. Another grievance also rankled in their bosoms. I had proposed to employ a part of the treasure of the temple in erecting edifices for public use. My proposal was scorned. The Pharisees were the avowed enemies of Jesus. They cared not for the government. They bore with bitterness the severe reprimands, which the Nazarene for three years had been continually giving them wherever he went. Timid and too weak to act by themselves, they had embraced the quarrels of the Herodians and the Sadducees. Besides these three parties, I had to contend against the reckless and profligate populace, always ready to join sedition, and profit by the disorder and confusion that resulted therefrom.


CONDEMNED TO DEATH
Jesus was dragged before the High Priest, and condemned to death. It was then that the High Priest, Caiaphas, performed a divisory act of submission. He sent his prisoner to me to confirm his condemnation and secure his execution. I answered him that, as Jesus was a Galilean, the affair came under Herod's jurisdiction, and ordered him to be sent thither. The wily Tetrarch professed humility, and protesting his deference to the lieutenant of Caesar, he committed the fate of the man to my hands. Soon my palace assumed the aspect of a besieged citadel. Every moment increased the number of malcontents. Jerusalem was inundated with crowds from the mountains of Nazareth. All Judea appeared to be pouring into the city.


"BEWARE, BEWARE, AND TOUCH NOT THAT MAN; FOR HE IS HOLY."
I had taken a wife from among the Gauls, who pretended to see into futurity. Weeping and throwing herself at my feet she said to me: "Beware. Beware, and touch not that man; for he is holy. Last night I saw a vision. he was walking on the water; he was flying on the wings of the wind. He spoke to the tempest and to the fishes of the lake; all were obedient to him. Behold, the torrent of Mount Kedron flows with blood, the statues of Caesar are filled with gemonide; the columns of the interium have given away and the sun is veiled in mourning like a vestal in the tomb. Ah! Pilate, evil; awaits thee. If thou wilt not listen to the vows of thy wife, dread the curse of a Roman Senate; dread the frowns of Caesar."


By this time the marble stair groaned under the weight of the multitude. The Nazarene was brought back to me. I proceeded to the halls of justice, followed by my guard, and asked the people in a severe tone what they demanded.


"The death of the Nazarene," was the reply.
"For what crime?"
"He blasphemed; he has prophesied the ruin of the temple; he calls himself the Son of God; the Messiah, the King of the Jew."
"Roman justice," said I, "punishes not such offences with death."
"CRUCIFY HIM! CRUCIFY HIM!"


"Crucify him! Crucify him!" cried the relentless rabble. The vociferations of the infuriated mob shook the palace to its foundations.


There was but one who appeared to be calm in the midst of the vast multitude; it was the Nazarene. After many fruitless attempts to protect him from the fury of his merciless prosecutors, I adopted a measure which at the moment appeared to me to be the only one that could save his life. I proposed a measure, as it was their custom to deliver a prisoner on such occasions, to release Jesus and let him go free, that he might be the scapegoat, as they called it; but they said Jesus must be crucified. I then spoke to them of the inconsistency of their course as being incompatible with their laws, showing that no criminal judge could pass sentence on a criminal unless he had fasted one whole day; and that the sentence must have the consent of the Sanhedrin, and the signature of the president of that court; that no criminal could be executed on the same day his sentence was fixed, and the next day, on the day of his execution, the Sanhedrin was required to review the whole proceeding; also, according to their law, a man was stationed at the door of the court with a flag, and another a short way off on horseback to cry the name of the criminal and his crime, and the names of his witnesses, and to know if anyone could testify in his favor; and the prisoner on his way to execution had the right to turn back three times, and to plead any new thing in his favor. I urged all these pleas, hoping they might awe them into subjection; but they cried, "Crucify him! Crucify him!"


I THEN CALLED FOR A BASIN, AND WASHED MY HANDS
I then ordered Jesus to be scourged, hoping this might satisfy them; but it only increased their fury. I then called for a basin, and washed my hands in the presence of the clamorous multitude, thus testifying that in my judgment Jesus of Nazareth had done nothing deserving of death; but in vain. It was his life these wretches thirsted for.


Often in our civil commotions have I witnessed the furious anger of the multitude, but nothing could be compared with what I witnessed on this occasion. it might have been truly said that all the phantoms of the infernal regions had assembled at Jerusalem. The crowd appeared not to walk, but to be borne off and whirled as a vortex, rolling along in living waves from the portals of the Praetorium even into Mount Zion, with howling screams, shrieks, and vociferations such as were never heard in the seditions of the Pannonia, or in the tumults of the forum.


By degrees the day darkened like a winter's twilight, such as had been at the death of the great Julius Caesar. It was likewise the ides of March. I, the continued governor of a rebellious province, was leaning against a column of my basilica, contemplating athwart the dreary gloom these fiends of Tartrus dragging to execution the innocent Nazarene. All around me was deserted. Jerusalem had vomited forth her indwellers through the funeral gates that leads to Gemonica. An air of desolation and sadness enveloped me. My guards had joined the cavalry, and the centurion, with a distressed play of power, was endeavoring to keep order. I was left alone, and my breaking heart admonished me that what was passing at that moment appertained rather to the history of the gods, than that of men. A loud clamor was heard proceeding from Golgotha, which, borne on the winds, seemed to announce an agony such as was never heard by mortal ears. Dark clouds lowered over the pinnacle of the temple, and setting over the city covered it as with a veil. So dreadful were the signs that men saw both in the heavens and on the earth that Dionysius the Areopagite is reported to have exclaimed: "Either the author of nature is suffering or the universe is falling apart."


Whilst these appalling scenes of nature were transpiring, there was a dreadful earthquake in lower Egypt, which filled everybody with fear, and scared the superstitious Jews almost to death. It is said Balthasar, an aged and learned Jew of Antioch, was found dead after the excitement was over. Whether he died from alarm or grief is not known. He was a strong friend of the Nazarene.


THE SACRICIFICE WAS CONSUMMATED
Near the first hour of the night I threw my mantle around me, and went down into the city toward the gates of Golgotha. The sacrifice was consummated. The crowd was returning home, still agitated, it is true, but gloomy, taciturn, and desperate. What they had witnessed had stricken them with terror and remorse. I also saw my little Roman cohort pass by mournfully, the standard-bearer having veiled his eagle in token of grief, and I overheard some of the Jewish soldiers murmuring strange words which I did not understand. Others were recounting miracles very like those which have so often smitten the Romans by the will of gods. Sometimes groups of men and women would halt remain motionless in expectation of witnessing some new prodigy.


THEY ALL SLUNK OFF LIKE COWARDLY CURS
I returned to the Praetorium, sad and pensive. On ascending the stairs, the steps of which were still stained with the blood of the Nazarene, I perceived an old man in a suppliant posture, and behind him several Romans in tears. He threw himself at my feet and wept most bitterly. It is painful to see an old man weep, and my heart being already overcharged with grief, we though strangers, wept together. And in truth it seemed that the tears lay very shallow that day with many whom I perceived in the vast concourse of people. I never witnessed such an extreme revulsion of feeling. Those who betrayed and sold him, those who testified against him, those who cried, "Crucify him! we have his blood," all slunk off like cowardly curs, and washed their teeth with vinegar. As I am told that Jesus taught a resurrection and a separation after death, if such be the fact, I am sure it commenced in this vast crowd.


"Father," said I to him, after gaining control of my feelings," who are you, and what is your request?"


PERMISSION TO BURY JESUS OF NAZARETH
"I am Joseph of Arimathaea," replied he, "and am come to beg of you upon bended knees the permission to bury Jesus of Nazareth."


" Your prayer is granted." I said to him, and I ordered Manilus to take some soldiers with him to superintend the interment, lest it should be profaned.


A few days after the sepulcher was found empty. His disciples proclaimed all over the country that Jesus had risen from the dead, as he had foretold. This created more excitement even than the crucifixion. And to its truth I cannot say for certain, but I have made some investigation of the matter; so you can examine for yourself see if I am in fault, as Herod represents.


Joseph buried Jesus in his own tomb. Whether he contemplated his resurrection or calculated to cut him another, I cannot tell. The day after he was buried one of the priests came to the Paetorium and said they were apprehensive that his disciples intended to steal the body of Jesus and hide it, and then make it appear that he had risen from the dead, as he had foretold and of which they were perfectly convinced. I sent him to the captain of the royal guard {Malcus} to tell him to take the Jewish soldiers, and place as many around the sepulcher as were needed; then if anything should happen they could blame themselves, and not the Romans.
When the great excitement arose about the sepulcher being empty, I felt a deeper solicitude than ever. I sent for Malcus, who told me he had placed his lieutenant, Ben Isham, with one hundred soldiers, around the sepulcher. He told me that Isham and the soldiers were very much alarmed at what had occurred there that morning I sent for this man Isham, who related to me, as near as I can recollect, the following circumstances; He said that at about the beginning of the fourth watch; He saw a soft and beautiful light over the sepulcher. He at first thought the women had come to embalm the body of Jesus, as was their custom, but he could not see how they had gotten through the guards. While these thoughts were passing through his mind, behold the whole place was lighted up, and there seemed to be crowds of the dead in their graveclothes. All seemed to be shouting and filled with ecstasy, while all around and above was the most beautiful music he had ever heard: and the whole air seemed to be full of voices praising God. At this time there seemed to be a reeling and swimming of the earth, so that he turned so sick and faint that he could not stand on his feet. he said the earth seemed to swim from under him, and his senses left him, so that he knew not what did occur. I asked him if he could not have been mistaken as to the light. Was it not day that was coming in the East? He said at first he thought of that, but at a stone's cast it was exceedingly dark; and then he remembered it was too early for day. I asked him if his dizziness might not have come from being awakened and getting up too suddenly, as it sometimes had the effect. He said he was not, and had not been asleep all night, as the penalty was death for him to sleep on duty. He said he had let some of the soldiers sleep at a time. Some were asleep then. I asked him how long the scene lasted. He said he did not know, but he thought it was nearly an hour. He said it was hid by the light of the day. I asked him if he went to the sepulcher after he had come to himself. He said no, because he was afraid; that just as soon as relief came they all went to their quarters. I asked him if he had been questioned by the priests. he said he had. They wanted him to say it was an earthquake, and that they were asleep, and offered him money to say that the disciples came and stole Jesus; but we saw no disciples, he did not know that the body was gone until he was told. I asked him what was the private opinion of those priests he had conversed with. He said that some of them thought that Jesus was no man; that he was not a human being; that he was not the son of Mary; that he was not the same that was said to be born of the Virgin in Bethlehem; that the same person had been on earth before with Abraham and Lot, and at many times and places.

It seemed to me that if the Jewish theory be true, these conclusions are correct, for they are in accord with this man's life, as is known and testified by both friends and foes, for the elements were no more in his hands than the clay in the hands of the potter. He could convert water into wine; he could change death into life, disease into health; he could calm the seas, still the storms, call up fish with a silver coin in its mouth. Now, I say if he could do all these things, which he did and many more, as the Jews all testify, and it was doing these things that created this enmity against him-- he was not charged with criminal offenses, nor was he charged with violating any law, nor of wronging any individual in person, and all these facts are known to thousands, as well by his foes as by his friends--I am almost ready to say, as did Manlius at the cross: "Truly this was the Son of God."

Now noble Sovereign, this is as near the facts in the case as I can arrive at, and I have taken pains to make the statement very full, so that you may judge of my conduct upon the whole, as I hear Antipater has said many hard things of me in this matter. END TIME CHURCH: The Great Falling Away || David Wilkerson

Question: "Will there be a great apostasy / falling away during the end times?"

Answer: The Bible indicates that there will be a great apostasy during the end times. The “great apostasy” is mentioned in 2 Thessalonians 2:3. The KJV calls it the “falling away,” while the NIV and ESV call it “the rebellion.” And that’s what an apostasy is: a rebellion, an abandonment of the truth. The end times will include a wholesale rejection of God’s revelation, a further “falling away” of an already fallen world.

The occasion of Paul’s writing to the Thessalonians was to correct some of the errors concerning the end times that the believers had heard from false teachers. Among the falsehoods was that “the day of the Lord has already come” (2 Thessalonians 2:2). The Christians in Thessalonica were afraid that Jesus had already come, they had missed the rapture, and they were now in the tribulation. Paul had already explained the rapture to them in his first letter (1 Thessalonians 4:16–17). Paul writes his second letter to assure them that, contrary to what they had heard, and despite the persecution they were enduring, the “day of Christ” had not yet come.

In 2 Thessalonians 2:3, Paul makes it clear that the day of the Lord, a time of worldwide judgment (Isaiah 13:6; Obadiah 1:15), will not transpire until two things happen. First, the falling away, or great apostasy, must occur. Second, the “man of lawlessness” must be revealed, he who is called the “son of perdition,” also known as the Antichrist. Once this person makes himself known, the end times will indeed have come. Numerous speculations about the identity of the man of sin, beginning in the first century, have included Caligula, Caius Caesar, Mohammed, Napoleon, and any number of Roman popes. None of them were the Antichrist.

The man of lawlessness, according to 2 Thessalonians 2:4, is the one who “will oppose and will exalt himself over everything that is called God or is worshiped, so that he sets himself up in God’s temple, proclaiming himself to be God.” Clearly, this has not yet happened; no one since Paul’s time has set himself up as God in the Jewish temple. Two thousand years have passed since the epistle was written, and the “day of the Lord” has not yet come. Paul assures us that it will not come until the falling away comes first.

The Greek word translated “rebellion” or “falling away” in verse 3 is apostasia, from which we get the English word apostasy. It refers to a general defection from the true God, the Bible, and the Christian faith. Every age has its defectors, but the falling away at the end times will be complete and worldwide. The whole planet will be in rebellion against God and His Christ. Every coup requires a leader, and into this global apostasy will step the Antichrist. We believe this takes place after the church has been raptured from the earth.

Jesus warned the disciples concerning the final days in Matthew 24:10–12: “At that time many will turn away from the faith and will betray and hate each other, and many false prophets will appear and deceive many people. Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold.” These are the characteristics of the great apostasy of the end times.

Short History of the Knights Templar


Knights Templar
The Knights Templar were formed following the First Crusade, and although they disbanded in the 1300s, they are still the focus of myth and legend. But how much do you know about the history of the mysterious Knights Templar?

After the success of the First Crusade where Jerusalem was reclaimed from the Muslims, several groups of pilgrims from various places in Western Europe started to journey to the Holy Land. It was not an easy journey as many people were killed while crossing the Muslim-controlled territory. Sometime in the year 1118, Hugues de Payens, a knight from France, together with his eight relatives and friends, founded a military order, which they called the Poor Knights of the Temple of King Solomon, which was later renamed the Knights Templar. They were supported by the king of Jerusalem, Baldwin II and Temple Mount became their headquarters. They vowed to protect the Christians visiting the Holy Land.

Religious leaders initially criticized them. However, by 1129 they were given the formal endorsement by the Catholic Church, with the support of the very prominent abbot at that time, Bernard of Clairvaux. Although the Templars took vows of poverty, their order was allowed to accrue land and wealth and they received not only lavish donations from many regions of Europe but also found new recruits. The knights likewise adopted a more spartan code of conduct and started wearing what would become their signature garment: white habits decorated with a red cross on the chest.

Branches of the Knights Templar
Within a short time, the Templars had expanded to several thousand members, and established new chapters across Western Europe. They became known as fierce warriors for the major battles they fought during the Crusades. They were not allowed to retreat unless they were seriously outnumbered and their religious fervour gave them strength. With donations continuing to pour in, they set up a banking system so that religious pilgrims could deposit assets while still in their home country, and withdraw funds when they reached Jerusalem. The Templars gained huge financial wealth from large donations and several business ventures. During the height of their power, they owned several fleet of ships, were the primary lenders to the nobles and monarchs of Europe and even owned the island of Cyprus.

Decline of the Knights Templar
The Muslim soldiers regained Jerusalem in the latter part of the 12th century and changed the course of the Crusaders’ history. The Muslims were able to force the Knights Templar to relocate a number of times, and with the Europeans’ dwindling support for the military campaigns in Jerusalem, the popularity of the Templars began to wane as well. They also started to have skirmishes with other Christian military orders, and participated in battles that were unsuccessful. Around 1303, they no longer had a foothold in the Muslim world, and their base of operation was moved to Paris. They faced another adversary in Philip IV, the king of France, who wanted to bring them down. It could be because the Templars refused to grant him additional loans on top of his other loans or it could be because the Templars were interested in forming their own state somewhere in the southeastern part of France.

The last grand master of the Knights Templar was Jacques de Molay. He was arrested together with several other Knights on October 13, 1307. They were charged with numerous offences, such as financial corruption, fraud, homosexuality, spitting on the cross, devil worship and heresy. They were tortured brutally and under duress, many of the Templars, including de Molay, confessed. Many of the Templars were burned at the stake in Paris because they recanted the confessions they made earlier when they were tried. De Molay was also burned at the stake in 1314. The pope at that time was Clement V. He previously raised concern about the secret initiation rites conducted by the Knights Templar and actually ordered an inquiry of his own. In 1312 King Philip convinced the Pope to dissolve the Knights Templar.

The Knights Templar: Do they still exist today?
The Knights Templar were thought to have been disbanded some 700 years ago. However, there are those who believe that the order still exists and has just gone underground. In the 18th century, the Freemasons and some other organizations resurrected some of the traditions and symbols of the medieval knights. In recent years, stories surfaced, many of which found their way into books and films. Some say that the Knights Templar, while headquartered at Temple Mount, dug up the Holy Grail. Another story said that they have kept a secret that could destroy the Catholic Church.

PART I

What Is a Christian Warrior?

War has been constant throughout history. Many have been conscripted into the armies of men. So, too, have the people of God been called to war­­—one in which the ultimate stakes hang in the balance.

The modern soldier is well trained and equipped in the art of waging war. By the time he (or, in this day and age, she) is ready to face battle, many long hours will have been spent in basic training. He will have been prepared physically and mentally to deal with the rigors of combat. The soldier will know how to identify the enemy and his tactics. To battle against the enemy, he will be adept in using the tools of his trade. In combat, he will carry the most advanced military gear his country can afford. Some of this equipment is designed to take out the enemy, while other parts are designed to protect critical body areas.The boots the soldier wears will protect, support and strengthen the feet carrying him into battle. A camouflaged uniform makes him less visible to his foe. Around the upper body he dons a flak jacket or a bulletproof vest to protect vital organs. Over this, he will put on a load-bearing vest (LBV) to carry grenades and other ammunition.Around the soldier’s waist will be a belt holding a first-aid kit, canteens of thirst-quenching water and a knife. Strapping on an “Alice” pack, he will carry 100 pounds of additional essential gear. He will never go into battle without a bullet-stopping Kevlar helmet protecting his head. And in his hands he will carry a battle-tested, lethal M16 rifle.When worn and properly used, these things can mean the difference between staying alive or becoming a casualty of war. 

A Part of Christianity

In the Bible, Christianity is compared to warfare. Indeed, it is a very real aspect of the way that those who follow Christ must live. Those who desire to live this way will face many battles—battles that must be won if we are to make it into the kingdom of God. There is effort involved—energy must be expended in the day-to-day life of a true Christian.The reward—eternal life!—is well worth this effort. We dare not let this goal slip away. Notice this admonition from the Word of God: “Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto you are also called, and have professed a good profession before many witnesses” (I Tim. 6:12). Take note of the powerful verbs used here—fight, lay hold—urging Christians to take action and put forth effort. No one can sit idly by and expect to win the Christian fight. We must always be ready to valiantly defend our position.Paul urged Timothy to do just that: “This charge I commit unto you, son Timothy, according to the prophecies which went before on you, that you by them might war a good warfare; holding faith, and a good conscience; which some having put away concerning faith have made shipwreck” (I Tim. 1:18-19).Too many, especially in this age, failed to take these words seriously. Growing tired and lethargic, no longer putting forth the required effort, they allowed their faith to become smashed like a ship pounded by waves. Battle fatigue set in and they became as casualties of war.No wonder Paul further instructed Timothy to “endure hardness, as a good soldier of Jesus Christ,” knowing that “no man that wars entangles himself with the affairs of this life; that he may please Him who has chosen him to be a soldier” (II Tim. 2:3-4).Paul knew that his “son in the faith” would face many tough battles, constantly fighting against the enemy forces seeking to take his eternal life.To win this all-out war, a Christian’s focus must be centered on the task at hand. He must allow nothing—no entanglements or distractions—to avert his attention.Paul had steadfastly followed God’s way as a soldier of Christ. He knew shortly before his death that he had won the Christian fight. Notice: “For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand. I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love His appearing” (4:6-8). 

Spiritual Army

Waging war has been continual throughout the history of God’s Church. Paul could clearly see that from his day forward, all Christians would engage in struggles, conflicts and real battles against evil forces.Like Timothy, upon our conversion and baptism, we were put into the Church—inducted as soldiers into the army of God. We did not volunteer; we were drafted (John 13:18; 15:16). Yet, we are not a physical army fighting with physical weapons of war. Nor do we fight against a physical foe. As the Church of the living God, we are a spiritual army. And we are at war—engaged in spiritual warfare!Paul admonished the Corinthians of this very fact, telling them, “For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh: (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strongholds)” (II Cor. 10:3-4).Every good soldier will study his enemy to determine his strengths and weaknesses. And to be able to defeat the enemy, he must know how to deftly use, with overwhelming force, the weapons at his disposal. 

Our Common Enemies

Every true Christian faces the same three enemies. These mighty foes are in league against us. They are crafty, cunning and lurking about, ready to attack at every opportunity. They seek to confuse and overwhelm us and wear us down. Their ultimate goal is to murder us, to take away eternal life.These three enemies are self, society and Satan. We will have to battle them for the rest of our physical lives. Every ounce of energy and effort must be put forth to gain victory over them.Let’s examine each of our enemies. 

SELF

The first enemy in the Christian’s daily warfare is the self—carnal human nature, with all of its inordinate lusts. As II Corinthians 10:3-4 shows, as long as we are in the flesh, we will have to battle our carnal human nature. The natural mind is a stronghold against God. It does not want to be conquered; it does not want to submit to the will of God. Carnal nature is the enemy of God, and is even against the very knowledge of God. It wants—and will try—to destroy you (Rom. 8:5-7)!The self wants to do its own things and think its own thoughts. It will cleverly rationalize all it wants to do. It is “deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked” (Jer. 17:9) and seeks only to bring forth the works of the flesh: vanity, jealousy, lust and greed (Gal. 5:19-21). It wants us to violate God’s spiritual Law, enticing us to sin. By doing this, it can cut us off from God (Isa. 59:1-2). Unless we successfully wage and win the war against the self—striving to resist its impulses leading to sin—our human nature will destroy us.We must “[cast] down imaginations, and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, and [bring] into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ” (II Cor. 10:5). There is an ongoing battle for control of your mind—a battle that you must win at all costs! 

SOCIETY

The second deadly enemy of all Christians is this present evil age—the society that surrounds us (Gal. 1:4). All it has to offer looks very appealing, alluring and glamorous. It brims over with the latest electronic gadgets, trendy clothing, fast cars, endless movies, music, shopping malls, dance clubs, pleasures, thrills, excitement, and on and on. This world appears to be wrapped with everything that glitters and is gold. It appeals to the five senses. And because it is built upon and motivated by the products of human nature—vanity, lust, greed, etc.—we are naturally drawn to it and, if not on guard, caught up in it.Since early childhood, we began conforming to the world’s ways, customs and practices. We learned to celebrate its holidays. We easily accepted without question the lifestyles of the world we grew up in.Yet, this is what our attitude toward society should be: “Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. And the world passes away, and the lust thereof” (I John 2:15-17).We must carefully examine our ways to see if they conform to God’s ways or the ways of this world. We must overcome and reject every way that is contrary to the Christian walk. We dare not become involved in close relationships with people of this society, or “go along to get along,” worrying about how the world views us. Conforming to the world is not warring against it!The world hates us because we are different from it—not of it (John 17:14, 16). Yes, we live in the world, but we cannot be a part of it. We must fight against its pulls like a soldier on an obstacle course, which strengthens and challenges him. A Christian must handle the obstacles of a society full of snares, barbed wire and land mines.Take this admonishment to heart—your life depends on it: “Know you not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? Whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God” (Jms. 4:4), “and the world passes away, and the lust thereof: but he that does the will of God abides forever” (I John 2:17). 

SATAN

The third great enemy of all Christians is Satan the devil. As the “god of this world” (II Cor. 4:4) and “the prince of the power of the air,” he “works in the children of disobedience” (Eph. 2:2), and injects his attitudes into their unsuspecting minds. No wonder the Bible refers to society as “this present evil world” and states that it is thoroughly deceived (Rev. 12:9).Satan has so completely deceived the world that it is in doubt of his very existence. Human beings are completely ignorant of the fact that human nature is really Satan’s nature! As “the prince of the power of the air,” he broadcasts feelings of anger, hatred, rebellion, envy, jealousy, lust, strife, bitterness, resentment, competition and so on, seeking to instill these thoughts in the mind of every human being. He is clever, cruel, relentless and experienced. He never grows tired. Nor does he suffer from battle fatigue. He constantly broadcasts attitudes of doubt, despondency, depression and negative feelings.Most of all, he seeks to overcome and overwhelm those who have the Holy Spirit. Converted minds are not immune to Satan’s broadcast. He wants the people of God to doubt, be depressed, be hostile to authority, and be filled with bitterness, resentment and criticism against the ministry and each other. These are nothing more than “thought bombs” being dropped all around us!Acting swiftly, at our most inopportune time—when we least expect it—Satan will exploit and intensify every rationalizing excuse and compromising twist of our carnal mind. He will poke and probe for weaknesses—anything he can use against us, anything that will appeal to human nature.And he does not work alone. Notice: “For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness [wicked spirits] in high places” (Eph. 6:12). The devil has a whole army of demons that he enlists in his effort against us.Each of us must “be sober, be vigilant; because [our] adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walks about, seeking whom he may devour” (I Pet. 5:8). Our battle cry must be “resist the devil,” knowing that “he will flee from [us]” (Jms. 4:7). Though Satan is a cunning, brilliant and relentless adversary, we can—and must—defeat him. 

Not Alone

We are not alone in our daily Christian warfare. As a spiritual army, we have the greatest Commander-in-Chief possible—God the Father. He has called us—drafted us—into His army to fight against our three great enemies. God is able to “supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus” (Phil. 4:19). He has not left us defenseless, unable to fight against our foes. He has given us the most powerful force in the universe, His Spirit, which is available to us at all times. Since the time we became Christian soldiers at baptism, we have been infused with it. We are admonished to “stir up the gift of God, which is in [us] by the putting on of…hands” (II Tim. 1:6) which is not “the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind” (vs. 7). We can never allow our supply lines to this power to be cut off.
Our orders come from the “captain of [our] salvation” and the “author and finisher of our faith”—Jesus Christ (Heb. 2:10; 12:2). And as our Captain, Christ will lead and help us in battle. Notice this Old Testament passage: “And it came to pass, when Joshua was by Jericho, that he lifted up his eyes and looked, and, behold, there stood a man over against him with His sword drawn in His hand: and Joshua went unto Him, and said unto Him, Are you for us, or for our adversaries? And He said, No; but as captain of the host of the Lord am I now come. And Joshua fell on his face to the earth, and did worship, and said unto Him, What say my lord unto His servant? And the captain of the Lord’s host said unto Joshua, Loose your shoe from off your foot; for the place whereon you stand is holy. And Joshua did so” (Josh. 5:13-15).The One who would later become Christ appeared to Joshua, holding His drawn sword in hand, and declared that He was the Captain of the Lord’s host. Since Jesus is “the same yesterday, and today, and forever” (Heb. 13:8), He will lead us into battle and to absolute victory, as He did for Joshua and ancient Israel. We can take encouragement from these words:“Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord; and the people whom He has chosen for His own inheritance. The Lord looks from heaven; He beholds all the sons of men. From the place of His habitation He looks upon all the inhabitants of the earth. He fashions their hearts alike; He considers all their works. There is no king saved by the multitude of an host: a mighty man is not delivered by much strength. A horse is a vain thing for safety: neither shall he deliver any by his great strength. Behold, the eye of the Lord is upon them that fear Him, upon them that hope in His mercy; to deliver their soul from death, and to keep them alive in famine. Our soul waits for the Lord: He is our help and our shield” (Psa. 33:12-20).As long as we strive to obey and please God, we need not fear. It is not a question of whether we will win the war, but rather when. Keeping a right heart, a right attitude, along with remaining close to and in contact with the Captain of our salvation, assures our protection from the enemy (Psa. 34:7). 

Our Armor

Like any good battlefield commander, Christ has thoroughly equipped His army with tried and tested battle gear. It is essential that you know what each piece of this armor is and what it is used for, and to never go into battle without it. Neglecting or forgetting any part will leave you exposed and unprotected.
Through Paul, we are urged to put on the armor of God—also called the “armor of light” (Rom. 13:12)—in order to fight and prevail in this spiritual battle. Consider: “Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of His might. Put on the whole armor of god, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil…Wherefore take unto you the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth.” (Read Ephesians 6:10-17.)Truth refers to the inspired Word of God. Christ plainly stated that God’s Word is truth (John 17:17). This is a critical piece of the Christian’s armor. Through the Bible, the true God is revealed to us. We know that He is the Creator of all that is, and that He and Jesus Christ currently constitute the God Family, into which we can be born. We know about the Sabbath and Holy Days. Through God’s Word, we have the knowledge of His plan of Salvation. We also know the true Jesus Christ, who is our Savior, High Priest, elder Brother and soon-coming King. Because God opened our minds to understand His Word, we have been freed from the false, Satan-inspired pagan customs, traditions and holidays of this world.Having our loins “girt” with the truth protects and insulates us from the fiery darts of the devil. Truth must be firmly secured about our waist—attached to it is the breastplate of righteousness and hanging from it is the sword of the Spirit. Losing any part of the truth leaves the breastplate of righteousness loose and allows the sword of the Spirit to fall on the ground. If this happens, we are leaving ourselves exposed to fatal injury.The breastplate of righteousness is obedience to God’s commandments (Psa. 119:172), which brings automatic blessings and protection from God. In ancient warfare, soldiers wore breastplates to protect the heart. Recall that modern-day soldiers wear flak jackets for the same reason. Similarly, when a Christian incorporates God’s Law into his mind—his “heart,” the seat of his emotions and desires—his motives will be based on love toward God and neighbor, and he will be protected from the way of sin (Psa. 119:1-3, 10, 28-40, 97-110, 112). Keeping God’s Law means that we are always in close contact with Him, and are able to draw strength from His Spirit (Acts 5:32). Living according to the Law ensures our spiritual vitality. Christ clearly stated, “If you will enter into life, keep the commandments” (Matt. 19:17).The gospel of peace is the good news of the soon-coming, world-ruling kingdom of God—to be established when Christ returns as King of kings and Lord of lords, bringing true and lasting peace to a tired, dying, hopeless world. The gospel provides a solid footing, allowing us to dig our heels in and stand our ground against our three foes (self, society and Satan). History has shown that whenever Christians traded the true gospel for a false one, the kingdom of God was no longer their focus, and they soon accepted a cancerous body of heresies in place of God’s truth. The gospel proclaimed by Christ is a message of hope serving to strengthen our legs as we actively support the Work in carrying it to the world (Rom. 10:15). And as the children of God, who have been called to peace (I Cor. 7:15), we need never worry, be unsettled or have our resolve weakened by world events.The shield of faith is the faith of Jesus Christ, which we can have within us (Gal. 2:20; Rev. 14:12; Phil. 3:9)—not just our own human, physical faith, which will wax and ebb. Faith is imparted to us by the Holy Spirit (Gal. 5:22). And it is this faith—Christ’s faith within us—that enables us to conquer and overcome. We will have full assurance in the promises from God. We will have total belief that what He says He will do, He does.This faith will see us through the many trials and temptations that Satan throws in our path. This shield of faith provides the cover we need. It is a defensive weapon that grows ever larger and stronger with diligent use, eventually covering our entire body.The helmet of salvation is the knowledge of what salvation is, what it involves, how to achieve it, what it is all about—the purpose of human life. It is the knowledge of the right and true goal, and the awesome potential—the ultimate destiny—of mankind. It is the incredible, inspiring knowledge that we can be born into—become full members of—the God Family. Being armed with this helmet guards us against the blows of the enemy. It protects against the feelings of doubt and depression that Satan desperately wants to inject into our minds, in an all-out effort to cause us to give up. Without this vital knowledge, he could deliver blow after blow. Without the helmet of salvation, we will fail to remember why we were born—and we will also forget what we are fighting for! Knowing that we have salvation waiting for us at the end of the war, we can have the strength and determination to see the battle through to the very end.The sword of the Spirit is the written Word of God. This is the only offensive weapon a Christian has in fighting the devil and his devices (Heb. 4:12). While it may appear to be the same as being girded with the truth, it is slightly different. Hanging from the truth—all of God’s Word—it is drawn from it, cutting the enemies’ strategies and tactics to pieces. Knowing the whole counsel of God allows us to pull passages from the Bible to deftly wield as a sword, cutting through the lies, falsehoods, feelings of doubt, depression and cunning deceits of our foes. With it, we can also deflect whatever is thrown at us and deal deadly blows to our enemies (Matt. 4:1-11). Every soldier of Christ must master the use of this weapon, keeping it firmly in hand.

You Can Win


After we have put on the armor of God, Paul’s final instruction to us is to “[pray] always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit…watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints” (Eph. 6:18). This is the final thing we must do in the battle against all our enemies. We must draw close to God in persevering, fervent prayer, asking for more of His Spirit, His help and His protection—along with the strength, desire and determination needed to fight each and every battle. We need to continually pray for all of God’s people and the ministry.Armed with the knowledge of who our enemies are and the tactics they employ, having God and Christ in battle with us, and putting on the armor of God, we can defeat and overcome our foes. This is the perfect strategy for defeating human nature and the pulls of the world, both of which are influenced by the devil. If you faithfully, diligently adhere to this formula, you can and will win your war against these deadly enemies. PART II

Sun Tzu’s “The Art of War” and the Biblical Principles of Spiritual Warfare




 
Okay, this is a big one. I wrote what’s below on Sunday under the inspiration of the Spirit of Elohim.
This week we’re reading in 2 Corinthians 10:4–6 on spiritual warfare. It says,

For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in Elohim for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of Elohim, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Messiah, and being ready to punish all disobedience when your obedience is fulfilled.
I got inspired to read Sun Tzu’s The Art of War. The Ruach nudged me to then do a commentary on it in light of what the Bible has to say about spiritual warfare. Perhaps I could learn something from an expert on physical warfare and then apply it spiritually to us. Needless to say, the saints are in a battle for their lives worldwide against the forces of evil. The Bible prophesied this would be the case in the end times. Largely, the church in the West is asleep! It’s time to wake up. I for one refuse to be caught unprepared. I refuse to lie down for the enemy of YHVH Elohim. As a watchman on the wall, I must sound the alarm and help prepare the troops. So here’s my latest contribution to this effort. I hope it helps someone!

Sun Tzu was a Chinese military general, strategist, and philosopher who lived between the sixth and fifth centuries B.C. in ancient China. His work, The Art of War was unearthed in 1972, and since then has become a classic on the art of warfare. It is even used by the U.S. military.
The following are excerpts from this ancient work along with commentary from a biblical perspective giving the spiritual warrior in YHVH Elohim’s (the LORD God’s) army guidelines on how to be victorious over YHVH’s spiritual enemy.

I. — LAYING PLANS
1. Sun Tzu said: The art of war is of vital importance to the State.
2. It is a matter of life and death, a road either to safety or to ruin. Hence it is a subject of inquiry which can on no account be neglected.
3. The art of war, then, is governed by five constant factors, to be taken into account in one’s deliberations, when seeking to determine the conditions obtaining in the field.
4. These are: (1) The Moral Law; (2) Heaven; (3) Earth; (4) The Commander; (5) Method and discipline.
5,6. The Moral Law causes the people to be in complete accord with their ruler, so that they will follow him regardless of their lives, undismayed by any danger.
Comment: The moral law is the biblical Torah and the rest of the Word of Elohim as contained in the Bible. The Torah-word of YHVH Elohim (the God of the Bible) are his instructions, precepts, teachings or laws. The Torah is the foundation of truth for the rest of the Scriptures that follow. YHVH Elohim is the Creator and Supreme Ruler of the universe and is thus the originator of moral law. Since Elohim is the Creator and Sovereign Ruler of all the universe, it is the require of every human (and all the more so of those who claim to be his followers) to follow and obey him regardless of their lives, undismayed by any external threats or danger.
7. Heaven signifies night and day, cold and heat, times and seasons.
Comment: The spiritual saint warrior is called to have spiritual discernment (a gift of the Holy Spirit,1 Cor 12:10) and to understand the times and seasons (like the children of Issachar, 1 Chron 12:32) to know when, why, who and how to fight.
8. Earth comprises distances, great and small; danger and security; open ground and narrow passes; the chances of life and death.
Comment: The spiritual warrior knows the lay of the land spiritually. He must understand who are his friends and foes, the enemy’s plans and strategies, the enemy’s strengths and weaknesses, the enemy’s weapons and fortifications, and one’s own strengths and weaknesses and ability to wage war against the enemy (2 Cor 2:11 cp. 2 Cor 10:4).
9. The Commander stands for the virtues of wisdom, sincerely, benevolence, courage and strictness.
Comment: The commander is YHVH Elohim, the God of the Bible. The enemy is the world, the flesh and the devil. The virtues of wisdom, sincerity, benevolence, courage and strictness are delineated and elucidated in the Scriptures and exemplified by the righteous examples the men and woman contained therein. It behooves the spiritual warrior to be a diligent student of the Scriptures (the Word [i.e. the thoughts, purposes, will and mind] of Elohim) to learn from them and then to be able to practice these values. 
10. By method and discipline are to be understood the marshaling of the army in its proper subdivisions, the graduations of rank among the officers, the maintenance of roads by which supplies may reach the army, and the control of military expenditure.
Comment: Method and discipline involves loving YHVH Yeshua (Jesus) by obeying or keeping all of his commandments (John 14:15; Rev 12:17; 14:12). Discipline means overcoming the world, the flesh and the devil by walking in a personal relationship with Yeshua the Messiah and by being an active participant in Yeshua’s spiritual army (Eph 6:10–18; 2 Cor 10:4–6), which is comprised of like-minded believers in and disciples of the Messiah. Yeshua is the commander and chief of that army (Heb 2:10). His spiritual warrior-leaders are his apostles, prophets, evangelists, shepherds and teachers (Eph 4:11). The saint-warriors must know (and obey) the Word of Elohim and must use it as a weapon against the enemy (i.e., the world, the flesh and the devil; see Matt 4:3–11). 
12. Therefore, in your deliberations, when seeking to determine the military conditions, let them be made the basis of a comparison, in this wise:
13. (1) Which of the two sovereigns is imbued with the Moral law? (2) Which of the two generals has most ability?
Comment: The two opposing generals are YHVH Elohim and Satan the adversary (along with the carnal mind of man and the ways of this world or the antichrist world system, which the Bible refers to as the cosmos, and which is in opposition to YHVH and his truth or Word). Only the former is imbued with moral law. It is incumbent upon the warrior-saint to align his life with YHVH Elohim’s moral law if he is to be effective against the enemy (Jas 4:7).
(3) With whom lie the advantages derived from Heaven and Earth?
Comment: YHVH Elohim is the Supreme Power in the universe, and Yeshua the Messiah, his Son, defeated the world, the flesh and devil when he died on the cross and resurrected from the dead. Through him, the warrior-saint has the advantage over the enemy.
Ye are of Elohim, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world. (1 John 4:4; see also Rom 8:37)
(4) On which side is discipline most rigorously enforced?
Comment: That depends. Currently, the Christian church in the West (generally speaking) is in a lukewarm, weakened and anemic spiritual state. It is spiritually out of shape and sick. Revelation 3:14–21 describes this state as epitomized by the Laodicean church. The church isn’t in a healthy state to be able to engage the enemy effectively spiritually. The church has been losing spiritual ground in the Western culture for more than one hundred years. Francis Schaeffer talks about this in his books. Yeshua alludes to this in Luke 16:8.

(5) Which army is stronger?
Comment: Again, that depends. The church is currently weak spiritually. But YHVH is raising up his warrior bride, end time John the Baptists who will be preparing the way for Yeshua’s second coming. These will include Phinehases who will stand against the sexually immoral, Gideons who will overcome the heathen and corrupting Midianites, Davids who will slay the evil Goliaths of our day, Daniels who will be faithful to obey YHVH while enslaved in Babylon, the three Hebrew children in the midst of Babylon who will refuse to worship the devil-gods of the pagans, and end time saints who will be keeping YHVH’s commandments and who will have the testimony or faith of Yeshua (Rev 12:17; 14:12) and who will overcome the Satan the serpent by the blood of the Lamb and who will by willing to lose all including their lives for him (Rev 12:11).
(6) On which side are officers and men more highly trained?
Comment: That depends. Some on Messiah’s side are fit for battle, most aren’t, sadly. Again as Yeshua said in Luke 16:8.

For the sons of this world are more shrewd in their generation than the sons of light.
(7) In which army is there the greater constancy both in reward and punishment?
Comment: That depends. The Bible presents a plan of great constancy in both rewards and punishments. The problem is that many church leaders either don’t know what the Bible says or are refusing to teach and enforce its laws (because it’s not popular to do so, not politically correct, or because they are gospel peddlers and hireling shepherds who refuse to preach the whole and unmitigated truth of Elohim because doing so might offend their “giving units” and cut into the revenues they receive that keep their spiritual gigs going) along with the consequences for violating those laws. Those leaders who do will have a strong army. Those who don’t will have weak and easily defeated army.
14. By means of these seven considerations I can forecast victory or defeat.
15. The general that hearkens to my counsel and acts upon it, will conquer: let such a one be retained in command! The general that hearkens not to my counsel nor acts upon it, will suffer defeat:—let such a one be dismissed!
Comment: Follow the whole Word of Elohim and win. To the degree that the saints substitute the Word of Elohim with made-made doctrines and traditions that run counter to the Word of Elohim is to the degree that the enemy will defeat them. Most redeemed believers follow non-biblical man-made doctrines to one degree or another without knowing it more then they follow the actual Word of Elohim. To the degree they do, this will lesson their spiritual effectiveness.
18. All warfare is based on deception.
Comment: It depends on what one means by deception. The spiritual warfare the Bible-believing saint engages in is based on the immutable and divinely revealed truth of Elohim as found in the Bible and deception. Period. The saints must fight with the sword of the truth, which is the Word of Elohim (Eph 6:17). No deception is necessary. That doesn’t mean that the saint shouldn’t fight like a wise serpent and use ingenious tactics to outwit the enemy (Matt 10:16; Luke 16:8). But the saint’s strength is in his adherence to the moral high ground of divinely revealed truth — the Word of Elohim. That truth will be the standard of judgment by which YHVH Elohim (the righteous Judge of the universe) will eventually judge everyone and everything.
At the same time, YHVH will give his warrior-saints ingenious ways to fool the enemy by unconventional methods of warfare, surprise attacks and unsuspecting maneuvers. The Old Testament is full of such examples (Moses defeating the Amalakits by lifting up his hands, marching around Jericho, Gideon using lamps and shofars to defeat the Midianites, Samson defeating the Philistines, etc.). 
19. Hence, when able to attack, we must seem unable; when using our forces, we must seem inactive; when we are near, we must make the enemy believe we are far away; when far away, we must make him believe we are near.
Comment: The warrior-saint must rely on the Holy Spirit to give him the battle plans on how to fight the enemy. Be prepared to engage in unconventional methods as the Holy Spirit leads. Those uninformed in the art of spiritual warfare and unfamiliar with the Bible may think that some of the methods by which the Holy Spirit instructs you to engage the enemy are implausible, and even off-the-wall, but the warrior-saint obeys his heavenly Commander and Chief no matter what others say, for he walks by faith, not by sight. Like a good soldier, he follows the orders from his superiors whether he understands the orders or not.
21. If he is secure at all points, be prepared for him. If he is in superior strength, evade him.
Comment: The warrior-saint must know his own strengths and weaknesses. When spiritually weak, don’t engage the enemy. Pull back, get strengthened through repentance of sin and then learn to walk obediently in accordance with the Word of Elohim (Jas 4:7). When one is spiritually weak and unable to defeat the enemy, one must shore up one’s weak defenses through prayer, fasting, Bible study, receiving wise spiritual counsel and fellowship with other strong spiritual warriors. Walk in closer obedience to YHVH’s commands and becoming more grounded in the Word of Elohim. After that, wait for directions from on high on how and when to confront the enemy. Then, act obediently and in faith as YHVH directs, go out to engage the enemy, but not before you have done these things or you will be defeated!
24. Attack him where he is unprepared, appear where you are not expected.
Comment: The Holy Spirit knows our enemy better than we do, so we must trust YHVH to reveal to us the right tactics to use against the enemy. Yes, we must not be ignorant of our enemy’s devices (2 Cor 2:11), but we mustn’t be overly occupied with studying the enemy either. This could cause us to lose faith and become discouraged, especially if it looks like the odds are against us. Our focus should on and our faith in YHVH Elohim, for he is our defender and shield. He knows our enemy better than we ever could. He will show us how best to fight and defeat the enemy. It’s up to us to obey YHVH in faith trusting him. When YHVH hasn’t told us what to do, we must wait on him to give us directions on how to move against the enemy. While waiting, we must use the time to strengthen ourselves spiritually in YHVH Elohim and in his Word through righteous obedience.
25. These military devices, leading to victory, must not be divulged beforehand.
Comment: The warrior-saint must keep close confidences and never divulge the battle plans YHVH has given him to anyone unless permitted by the Holy Spirit to do so. As the WW II saying went, “Loose lips sink ships.”
26. Now the general who wins a battle makes many calculations in his temple ere the battle is fought. The general who loses a battle makes but few calculations beforehand. Thus do many calculations lead to victory, and few calculations to defeat: how much more no calculation at all! It is by attention to this point that I can foresee who is likely to win or lose.
Comment: Before engaging in battle with the enemy, preparations and calculations must be carefully made beforehand in the spiritual temple throne room of YHVH Elohim, Yeshua the Messiah, the Holy Spirit (through prayer and meditation on the Word of Elohim), and in accordance with the counsel of YHVH’s Written Word (the Bible), and among wise and trusted human counselors. (Luke 14:28–32)

II. — WAGING WAR
1. Sun Tzu said: In the operations of war, where there are in the field a thousand swift chariots, as many heavy chariots, and a hundred thousand mail-clad soldiers, with provisions enough to carry them a thousand li, the expenditure at home and at the front, including entertainment of guests, small items such as glue and paint, and sums spent on chariots and armor, will reach the total of a thousand ounces of silver per day. Such is the cost of raising an army of 100,000 men.
2. When you engage in actual fighting, if victory is long in coming, then men’s weapons will grow dull and their ardor will be damped. If you lay siege to a town, you will exhaust your strength.
3. Again, if the campaign is protracted, the resources of the State will not be equal to the strain.
4. Now, when your weapons are dulled, your ardor damped, your strength exhausted and your treasure spent, other chieftains will spring up to take advantage of your extremity. Then no man, however wise, will be able to avert the consequences that must ensue.
5. Thus, though we have heard of stupid haste in war, cleverness has never been seen associated with long delays.
6. There is no instance of a country having benefited from prolonged warfare.
7. It is only one who is thoroughly acquainted with the evils of war that can thoroughly understand the profitable way of carrying it on.
8. The skillful soldier does not raise a second levy, neither are his supply-wagons loaded more than twice.
9. Bring war material with you from home, but forage on the enemy. Thus the army will have food enough for its needs.
10. Poverty of the State exchequer causes an army to be maintained by contributions from a distance. Contributing to maintain an army at a distance causes the people to be impoverished.
Comment: Yeshua instructed his disciples to count the costs before following him. Most of them were martyred for their faith (Luke 14:27–33).
If anyone comes to Me and does not hate his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, and his own life also, he cannot be My disciple. And whoever does not bear his cross and come after Me cannot be My disciple. For which of you, intending to build a tower, does not sit down first and count the cost, whether he has enough to finish it lest, after he has laid the foundation, and is not able to finish, all who see it begin to mock him, saying, ‘This man began to build and was not able to finish.’
Or what king, going to make war against another king, does not sit down first and consider whether he is able with ten thousand to meet him who comes against him with twenty thousand? Or else, while the other is still a great way off, he sends a delegation and asks conditions of peace. So likewise, whoever of you does not forsake all that he has cannot be My disciple.
Those who fail to count the costs, or feel the cost is too high to pay shouldn’t go to war.
13,14. With this loss of substance and exhaustion of strength, the homes of the people will be stripped bare, and three-tenths of their income will be dissipated; while government expenses for broken chariots, worn-out horses, breast-plates and helmets, bows and arrows, spears and shields, protective mantles, draught-oxen and heavy wagons, will amount to four-tenths of its total revenue.
Comment: The warrior-saint’s strength comes from YHVH’s supernatural empowerment through his relationship with Yeshua and the Word of Elohim by the Holy Spirit. This doesn’t mean discouragement won’t set in. When fighting his enemies, David in the psalms discuss this in great length. But in every case, David found strength from YHVH and in his Word. David never lost a battle, though he had many struggles and obstacles to overcome. Yeshua made it very clear that only the overcomers will inherit his kingdom. This is the lot of the warrior-saint.

These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world. (John 16:33)
And you will be hated by all for My name’s sake. But he who endures to the end will be saved. (Matt 10:22)
To him who overcomes I will give to eat from the tree of life, which is in the midst of the Paradise of Elohim. (Rev 2:7)
To him who overcomes I will grant to sit with Me on My throne, as I also overcame and sat down with My Father on His throne. (Rev 3:21)
17. Therefore in chariot fighting, when ten or more chariots have been taken, those should be rewarded who took the first. Our own flags should be substituted for those of the enemy, and the chariots mingled and used in conjunction with ours. The captured soldiers should be kindly treated and kept.
Comment: The enemy’s soldiers (other people) aren’t the warrior-saints’ enemies. The saint is to love his human enemies, which is hard to do when they’re trying to destroy or kill you. Yeshua loved his enemies, and we are to follow his example. Yeshua loved each of us while we were still sinners (Rom 5:8 cp. John 3:16), and we should do the same to those who oppose us. We should view them as spiritual captives who need to be set free from enslavement to the world, the flesh and the devil. They are the warrior-saint’s mission field and should be viewed as those who are spiritually lost and need saving. They need the gospel message, and Yeshua has tasked us with giving it to them. We were enemies of YHVH once before he set us free through Yeshua. 

III. — ATTACK BY STRATAGEM
1. Sun Tzu said: In the practical art of war, the best thing of all is to take the enemy’s country whole and intact; to shatter and destroy it is not so good. So, too, it is better to recapture an army entire than to destroy it, to capture a regiment, a detachment or a company entire than to destroy them.
Comment: The warrior-saints goal should not be to kill the enemy, but to overcome him and to neutralize him spiritually. YHVH is the Judge who said that vengeance belongs to him alone (Rom 12:19). He will be the one to throw his unrepentant enemies into the lake of fire at the white throne judgment (Rev 20:11–15). YHVH has not given his servants this authority. Our job is to overcome the enemies of YHVH through spiritual warfare, and then we are to share the gospel with them in hopes of winning them over to YHVH’s side thus expanding the kingdom of Elohim on earth.
8. It is the rule in war, if our forces are ten to the enemy’s one, to surround him; if five to one, to attack him; if twice as numerous, to divide our army into two.
Comment: The warrior-saint must seek YHVH for the battle strategies to defeat the enemy as discussed above. To fight our spiritual enemies conventionally is likely to end in either exhaustion of our resources and energies or in defeat. We might win a battle or two, but we’ll lose the war. Why is this? Because Satan is the god of this world and in this world that he controls he has stacked everything against the saint including secular governmental authorities, the judicial systems, the economic system, the mainstream media, most educational institutions, false and unbiblical religious systems and the popular opinion of society’s masses (i.e. “politically correct group think”. The saint can’t expect to win fighting conventionally, since everything in this world is stacked against him begin with. This is why he must seek battle strategies from YHVH. This will surprise the enemy and will turn the tables on him, since he wasn’t expecting it. Furthermore, when the saint fights YHVH’s way, he will support us and bring his spiritual power to bear on the battle to our advantage providing we are fighting according to his will and instructions. The moment we do things our way and not his way, we risk losing YHVH’s support and thus losing the battle or war.
9. If equally matched, we can offer battle; if slightly inferior in numbers, we can avoid the enemy; if quite unequal in every way, we can flee from him.
Comment: In YHVH’s spiritual realm, the numerical strength of one’s army doesn’t matter. There are numerous examples in the Scriptures where a few saints defeated much larger and better physically equipped armies. But because YHVH’s servants trusted in him, followed his battle plans and were obedient to his commandments, they were victorious (e.g. David vs. Goliath, Gideon, Samson, Elijah, Elisha, etc., etc.). 

And ye shall chase your enemies, and they shall fall before you by the sword. And five of you shall chase an hundred, and an hundred of you shall put ten thousand to flight: and your enemies shall fall before you by the sword. For I will have respect unto you, and make you fruitful, and multiply you, and establish my covenant with you. (Lev 26:7–8)
YHVH promises to fight for his people, defeat their enemies and bless them on one condition: 

Ye shall make you no idols nor graven image, neither rear you up a standing image, neither shall ye set up any image of stone in your land, to bow down unto it: for I am YHVH your Elohim. Ye shall keep my sabbaths, and reverence my sanctuary: I am YHVH. If ye walk in my statutes, and keep my commandments, and do them. (Lev 26:1–3)
11. Now the general is the bulwark of the State; if the bulwark is complete at all points; the State will be strong; if the bulwark is defective, the State will be weak.
Comment: The warrior-saint’s bulwark is spiritual because his authority comes from Yeshua (2 Cor 10:4; Luke 9:1–2; 10:19). This power and authority to engage the enemy victoriously is based on his personal relationship with YHVH Elohim the God of Israel through Yeshua the Messiah by the Holy Spirit all the while walking righteous and repentant obedience to the whole Word of Elohim (from Genesis to Revelation) and trusting in the Word and promises of YHVH. The saint’s spiritual bulwark is also strengthened through his communion with other like-minded and spiritually strong warrior-saints.
14. (2) By attempting to govern an army in the same way as he administers a kingdom, being ignorant of the conditions which obtain in an army. This causes restlessness in the soldier’s minds.
15. (3) By employing the officers of his army without discrimination, through ignorance of the military principle of adaptation to circumstances. This shakes the confidence of the soldiers.
16. But when the army is restless and distrustful, trouble is sure to come from the other feudal princes. This is simply bringing anarchy into the army, and flinging victory away.
Comment: The warrior-saints’ physical leaders (apostles, prophets, evangelists, shepherds and teachers) who are spiritual generals under YHVH Elohim or Yeshua the Messiah must understand the biblical principles of spiritual warfare. Those who are the best leaders are those who have successfully engaged the enemy in the front lines of the battle themselves. Those who have never been to war and understand spiritual warfare from only a theoretical vantage point are likely to be more of a liability than an asset when trying to lead YHVH’s warrior-saints into spiritual battle. The same is true of “armchair” military generals compared to battle hardened generals in a physical army. These incompetent and unqualified generals will fight more like politicians and government bureaucrats who haven’t a clue about the realities of battle, then warriors who understand warfare from personal experience.
(1) He will win who knows when to fight and when not to fight.
Comment: This is where spiritual discernment and knowing the times and seasons like the sons of Issachar comes in. The spiritual general must be in tune with the Holy Spirit and take his marching orders from Elohim. To be able to do this effectively, the general must know the heart, mind and will of Elohim as revealed in the pages of Scriptures. To the degree that he doesn’t know the Scriptures will be to the degree he will be an incompetent general. The same is true if he believes that certain scriptures are not applicable to him (or have been “done away with”), and therefore, he refuses to apply them to his life, or he has no practical walking-it-out understanding of them.
(2) He will win who knows how to handle both superior and inferior forces.
Comment: The number of foes is immaterial to the spiritual warrior for the reasons previously noted.
(3) He will win whose army is animated by the same spirit throughout all its ranks. (4) He will win who, prepared himself, waits to take the enemy unprepared.
Comment: The spirit that animates the ranks of the warrior-saints is the Holy Spirit. All spiritual warriors must be animated, led, directed, motivated and totally empowered by the Holy Spirit in accordance with the full counsel of YHVH’s Word in everything the warrior does, thinks and says. If each warrior is thusly empowered, then the whole army will be so empowered, and no enemy, no matter how large or small, will be able to stand against YHVH’s spiritual army.
(5) He will win who has military capacity and is not interfered with by the sovereign.
Comment: For the spiritual warrior, he will win if led by the Holy Spirit of YHVH Elohim, who is the warrior’s Sovereign. Problems arise for the warrior when religious leaders or spiritual sub-sovereigns interfere or conflict with the will of the YHVH Elohim, the Chief Sovereign.
18. Hence the saying: If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.
Comment: The spiritual warrior must know himself. He must know his weakness, and turn them into strengths through the overcoming sin and repentance. He must then find his identity in who he is in Yeshua. The Scriptures call the redeemed believer an overcomer, more than a conqueror, a child of Elohim, victorious through Yeshua, a saint, a righteous one, one who is no longer under condemnation, one who is saved, a holy priesthood, and one who is seated with Yeshua in heavenly places. The warrior-saint must embrace this identity and then go forward in faith into battle as YHVH leads him.

IV. — TACTICAL DISPOSITIONS
1. Sun Tzu said: The good fighters of old first put themselves beyond the possibility of defeat, and then waited for an opportunity of defeating the enemy.
Comment: This is accomplished through spiritual preparation ahead of the battle. The spiritual warrior must prepare himself ahead of time as we have already discussed above.
2. To secure ourselves against defeat lies in our own hands, but the opportunity of defeating the enemy is provided by the enemy himself.
Comment: The old adage, “Forewarned is forearmed” applies here. The warrior-saint must know himself (who he is in Yeshua), know and strengthen his own weak areas, know his enemy (his strengths and weaknesses) and then know how, when and who to fight.
3. Thus the good fighter is able to secure himself against defeat, but cannot make certain of defeating the enemy.
Comment: The spiritual warrior is assured of victory because of the promises of Elohim in the Bible. That doesn’t mean that he might not lose some battles along the way, or go through some extremely hard times. After all, look at all that the biblical people of faith had to endure fighting YHVH’s spiritual battles. Many lost their lives for it. But the enemy can’t defeat the servant of the Most High in the ultimate sense, because he can’t kill the spirit and soul of man, only the body. 

And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. But rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell. (Matt 10:28)
And every one that hath forsaken houses, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my name’s sake, shall receive an hundredfold, and shall inherit everlasting life. (Matt 19:28)
5. Security against defeat implies defensive tactics; ability to defeat the enemy means taking the offensive.
Comment: The Christian church in the west is currently in a defensive mode. It’s running for its life. It can’t hope to win the battle against the world, the flesh and devil in such a position. The saint must not only defend, but must be on the offensive. The best defense is a good offense, as the saying goes. What is our main offensive tactic? It is the preaching of the gospel in the power of the Holy Spirit! When our enemy confronts us with both gun barrels blazing, we must preach the gospel to him. For example, when homosexual-fascists, secular humanists, leftists, Islamists or any other antichrist enemies of YHVH attempt to deprive the saint of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, the saint must not only move into defensive mode, but into an aggressive offensive mode as well. He must pull out his strongest weapon, which is the name, blood and Word of Elohim as preached through the gospel message. For example, Yeshua used the Word of Elohim (not men’s words) against Satan in the temptation in the wilderness, thus effectively defeating Satan (Matt 4:2–11). We can’t improve on this battle plan! It worked for Yeshua and the apostles and it will work for us. To use the Word of Elohim against the enemy means that the warrior-saint must know and even memorize the Word of Elohim, so he knows it when he needs to use it. Too many believers have been spiritually AWOL (or absent without leave) from YHVH’s spiritual army. They’ve become involved in and preoccupied with too many secular, flesh gratifying activities — living the so called “good life.” It’s time to turn off the television, computer, social media, video games and other forms of entertainment and other distractive secular activities and to start a regimen of spiritually conditioning as a soldier in YHVH’s army. The only other option is defeat!
7. The general who is skilled in defense hides in the most secret recesses of the earth; he who is skilled in attack flashes forth from the topmost heights of heaven. Thus on the one hand we have ability to protect ourselves; on the other, a victory that is complete.
Comment: The warrior-saint must not love his life unto death (Rev 12:11). He must be willing to lay his life down as Yeshua did. He must be willing to die fighting YHVH’s spiritual battles. This doesn’t only mean physical death, but he must be willing to give up his material possessions, hopes, dreams and relationships for the sake of Yeshua.

And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, and they did not love their lives to the death. (Rev 12:11)
Then said Yeshua unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it. For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul? For the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his angels; and then he shall reward every man according to his works. (Matt 16:24–27)
8. To see victory only when it is within the ken of the common herd is not the acme of excellence.
Comment: The spiritual warrior sees victory through the eyes of faith — faith in the Word of Elohim, faith in the promises of Elohim, faith that Yeshua defeated Satan, death, hell and the grave, and that we share in that victory if we endure to the end as overcomers.
9. Neither is it the acme of excellence if you fight and conquer and the whole Empire says, “Well done!”
10. To lift an autumn hair is no sign of great strength; to see the sun and moon is no sign of sharp sight; to hear the noise of thunder is no sign of a quick ear.
11. What the ancients called a clever fighter is one who not only wins, but excels in winning with ease.
Comment: The warrior-saint has already won the battle through Yeshua’s victory over sin and the grave, thus defeating the world, the flesh and the devil. As such, we are already more than conquerors through Yeshua (Rom 8:37), and if Elohim be for us, who can be against us (Rom 8:31)? The spiritual warrior has excelled in every area, and won the battle with ease through his faith in Yeshua the Messiah. We must remind the enemy of this at every possible opportunity and in every way possible. We mustn’t be ashamed of the gospel message and be willing to proclaim it everywhere we go when confronting the enemy. As Paul declared,

For I am not ashamed of the gospel of the Messiah: for it is the power of Elohim unto salvation to every one that believeth. (Rom 1:16)
13. He wins his battles by making no mistakes. Making no mistakes is what establishes the certainty of victory, for it means conquering an enemy that is already defeated.
Comment: The spiritual warrior must have no sin in his life. Sin is the transgression of YHVH’s legal code or commandments (the Torah, 1 John 3:4). To the degree that we have sin in our life will be to the degree that we have chinks in our spiritual armor into which the enemy can shoot his deadly spiritual arrows and take us out (Eph 6:16).
14. Hence the skillful fighter puts himself into a position which makes defeat impossible, and does not miss the moment for defeating the enemy.
Comment: This is only possible through a sinless, obedient, submissive life to the Word of Elohim through a spiritual relationship with Yeshua the Messiah.
15. Thus it is that in war the victorious strategist only seeks battle after the victory has been won, whereas he who is destined to defeat first fights and afterwards looks for victory.
Comment: The spiritual warrior goes to war knowing that he has already won the war through Yeshua the Messiah. We can read how the war ends in, for example, the book of Revelation in the Bible. So when we engage in spiritual battles here and now, never forget that regardless how the battle goes for us, we’ve won the war. If we’re walking in right relationship with Elohim, everything that happens to us is for our good, since YHVH loves us and he makes all things work together for our good (Rom 8:28). Sometimes we suffer “defeats” for the greater good of strengthening our faith and making us spiritually stronger. Sometimes we suffer defeats because of our own sin. This is simply an opportunity that YHVH is giving us to overcome that sin and strengthen the weak areas in our lives, so that we’ll be spiritually stronger for the next battle. Regardless, our lives are in Elohim’s loving hands and if we love and obey him, he won’t let us be destroyed. After all, what’s the worst thing the enemy can do to us? Kill us? Hah! That’s simply a promotion for us, for the next moment we awake from the dead, we’ll find ourselves with a glorified body in the Presence of Yeshua!
16. The consummate leader cultivates the moral law, and strictly adheres to method and discipline; thus it is in his power to control success.
Comment: The spiritual, biblically moral leader will be teaching, equipping and grounding his disciples spiritually in the full counsel of YHVH’s Word from Genesis to Revelation.
17. In respect of military method, we have, firstly, Measurement; secondly, Estimation of quantity; thirdly, Calculation; fourthly, Balancing of chances; fifthly, Victory.
18. Measurement owes its existence to Earth; Estimation of quantity to Measurement; Calculation to Estimation of quantity; Balancing of chances to Calculation; and Victory to Balancing of chances.
Comment: Simply put, the spiritual warrior believes the simplicity of the Word of Elohim and the gospel message. It’s so simple that even a child can understand it. 

But Yeshua said, Suffer little children, and forbid them not, to come unto me: for of such is the kingdom of heaven. (Matt 19:14)
But when Yeshua saw it, he was much displeased, and said unto them, Suffer the little children to come unto me, and forbid them not: for of such is the kingdom of Elohim. (Mark 10:14)
After believing, the warrior-saint must then walk out the Word of Elohim through a relationship with Yeshua. The rest will take care of itself. It’s really rather simple. Elaborate and detailed calculations, estimation and planning aren’t necessary. This is called walking in and being led of the Spirit.
20. The onrush of a conquering force is like the bursting of pent-up waters into a chasm a thousand fathoms deep.
Comment: At Yeshua’s second coming, his warrior-bride will return from heaven with him to defeat the Babylon the Great New World Order at the battle of Armageddon and nothing will stop Yeshua or his spiritual warriors from defeating his enemies, taking over the world, and then establishing his millennial kingdom on this earth (Rev 19:1–21).

V. ENERGY
10. In battle, there are not more than two methods of attack—the direct and the indirect; yet these two in combination give rise to an endless series of maneuvers.
Comment: When the spiritual warrior is walking in and by led by the Holy Spirit, he will be given instructions on how to attack the enemy. Sometimes the direct approach is necessary (e.g. direct confrontations through confrontational evangelism), and sometimes indirect methods are necessary (i.e., spiritual warfare prayer or relational evangelism). Usually the two approaches work hand-in-hand and side-by-side symbiotically and synergistically.
22. When he utilizes combined energy, his fighting men become as it were like unto rolling logs or stones. For it is the nature of a log or stone to remain motionless on level ground, and to move when on a slope; if four-cornered, to come to a standstill, but if round-shaped, to go rolling down.
23. Thus the energy developed by good fighting men is as the momentum of a round stone rolled down a mountain thousands of feet in height. So much on the subject of energy.
Comment: Every warrior in YHVH’s spiritual army must know his place, must know what his battles station is, understand how to use the weapons in which he is skilled, and to know when and how to use them. In so doing, he will be utilizing his spiritual skills and abilities in the most efficient and efficacious manner. He must also know how to follow the orders and signals of his commanding officers and how to coordinate his efforts in teamwork with the other soldiers in his group. Some soldiers are on the front lines directly confronting the enemy, some are prayer warriors, some feed and care for tired or wounded soldiers, some comfort them through music, some act as instructors in the art of spiritual war, some are wise counselors or leaders, others are tacticians and managers. Some tend the fires at home and take care of the children and supplies. Each has his or her role to play. The success of the army will be largely dependent on how well everyone works together in harmony as a spiritual community.

VI. WEAK POINTS AND STRONG
1. SunTzu said: Whoever is first in the field and awaits the coming of the enemy, will be fresh for the fight; whoever is second in the field and has to hasten to battle will arrive exhausted.
Comment: YHVH is looking for spiritual warriors who aren’t timid and fearful, but ready to fight the good fight here and now when he gives the command to do so. Yeshua continually decried those around him for having little faith. Faithlessness is fear (2 Tim 1:7; 1 Pet 4:18). The fearful and unbelieving will have no part in the kingdom of Elohim (Rev 21:8). It is the Holy Spirit that empowers the warrior to fight YHVH’s spiritual battle. The warrior depends on YHVH’s strength and not his own to fight and win each battle.

Hast thou not known? hast thou not heard, that the everlasting Elohim, YHVH, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary? there is no searching of his understanding. He giveth power to the faint; and to them that have no might he increaseth strength. Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall: but they that wait upon YHVH shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint. (Isa 40:28–31)
But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Spirit is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth. (Acts 1:8)
2. Therefore the clever combatant imposes his will on the enemy, but does not allow the enemy’s will to be imposed on him.
Comment: When fighting the enemy, the warrior-saint determines the battle lines based on the Word of Elohim and the leading of the Spirit of Elohim. The enemy wants us to play by his rules of engagement (e.g. by dragging us through his secular legal systems) and by trying to silence us from preaching the gospel and speaking the truth. We must play by YHVH’s rules of engagement, which are a whole other way of fighting about which the enemy knows little or nothing. The Holy Spirit in the very hour we need it will tell us what to say (and how to act) before our adversary (Matt 10:19). In this way, we are fighting our spiritual battles in YHVH’s strength and not in our own strength. 
4. If the enemy is taking his ease, he can harass him; if well supplied with food, he can starve him out; if quietly encamped, he can force him to move.
Comment: The spiritual warrior must never give the enemy rest when it comes to preaching to him the truth of the Word of Elohim. Confront the enemy with the truth of the Word. When we do this, YHVH has to defend his own Word against our enemies, and this puts the spiritual warrior in the place of YHVH fighting his battles for him, since they are YHVH’s battles. David did this when confronting Goliath. He came running to David in the name of the Eohim of Israel through YHVH’s covenantal relationship with the Israelites. We all know how that story ended!
5. Appear at points which the enemy must hasten to defend; march swiftly to places where you are not expected.
Comment: Many of the great warrior leaders in the Old Testament fought unconventionally against Israel’s enemies. We must do the same. Again, the Holy Spirit will reveal to us what to do if we seek YHVH and wait on him to reveal to us his battle tactics to defeat the enemy.
8. Hence that general is skillful in attack whose opponent does not know what to defend; and he is skillful in defense whose opponent does not know what to attack.
Comment: Again, when the spiritual warrior fights as YHVH leads him employing unconventional and Spirit-led tactics, it will keep the enemy off guard and the element of surprise will be in the saints’ favor. How does an enemy who has a sword and spear fight against a shofar and a clay lamp, or a sling shot, or the Jews praising YHVH through music, or against the ark of the covenant leading the warriors into battle, or against the prophet of Elohim who makes prophet declarations against the enemy, or a band of priest marching around the city walls carrying a wooden box blowing ram’s horns? The enemy has no defense against such tactics. Wait on YHVH and he will teach his warriors how to fight successfully each step of the way leading to victory. Yes, some will lose their lives along the way, but this isn’t a defeat in YHVH’s spiritual economy. Stephen was stoned, but it furthered the gospel in process. His death was for the greater spiritual good of expanding the kingdom of Elohim through the preaching of the gospel far and wide. Stephen won and so did the kingdom of Elohim. The Devil lost!
9. O divine art of subtlety and secrecy! Through you we learn to be invisible, through you inaudible; and hence we can hold the enemy’s fate in our hands.
Comment: From personal experience, I have learned that in the heat of battle, when confronting the enemy of the gospel, sometimes YHVH makes me invisible to my enemies. I have snuck behind enemy lines and ministered the gospel and defeated the enemy without anyone even knowing I was there. Elohim is great and acts strongly on behalf of his people!
25. In making tactical dispositions, the highest pitch you can attain is to conceal them; conceal your dispositions, and you will be safe from the prying of the subtlest spies, from the machinations of the wisest brains.
Comment: As noted above, never tip your hand to the enemy. Be careful who you talk to and to whom you divulge our plans. Our marching orders must come from the prayer closet in conjunction with the Word of Elohim. Keep tight lips and reveal the plans only to those who are spiritually mature, who share your spiritual foxhole, and will watch your back spiritually.
28. Do not repeat the tactics which have gained you one victory, but let your methods be regulated by the infinite variety of circumstances.
Comment: Before each battle, the warrior-saint must seek YHVH’s face for new directions on how to fight the next battle. Every battle is different. It’s laziness and incompetence to rely on the same old plan for each battle. It may or may not work. The conditions for each battle are different. Therefore, seek YHVH’s guidance who knows all and see all.
29. Military tactics are like unto water; for water in its natural course runs away from high places and hastens downwards.
30. So in war, the way is to avoid what is strong and to strike at what is weak.
31. Water shapes its course according to the nature of the ground over which it flows; the soldier works out his victory in relation to the foe whom he is facing.
Comment: There are times when the spiritual warrior has to make quick decisions on the spot. This is where a close relationship with YHVH is essential with the ability to hear his voice at the very moment his guidance is needed. Not all battles can be completely prepared for ahead of time. The spiritual warrior does his best to prepare ahead of time for each battle, but it’s always a faith walk, since there are always uncertainties. As the Scriptures say, “The just shall walk by faith [in YHVH Elohim],” (2 Cor 5:7; Heb 10:38).

VII. MANEUVERING
1. Sun Tzu said: In war, the general receives his commands from the sovereign.
Comment: As already noted, all spiritual military leaders must be in tune with YHVH Elohim if they expect to defeat the enemy. There is no other way!
2. Having collected an army and concentrated his forces, he must blend and harmonize the different elements thereof before pitching his camp.
Comment: As already noted, all the members of the body of Yeshua must be working and walking together in sync. There is no room for division, strife, fear, confusion, sin or disobedience. When the children of Israel weren’t in complete obedience to YHVH’s commands and Achan brought sin into the camp, the Israelites were defeated at Ai. After the sin was put out of the camp and YHVH’s commands were followed, they were victorious over their enemies.
11. We may take it then that an army without its baggage-train is lost; without provisions it is lost; without bases of supply it is lost.
Comment: Similarly, the Holy Spirit is the spiritual warriors source of sustenance, strength and guidance. Without this constant supply of spiritual provision, the saints’ army will lose the battle. The saint also needs the constant support of fellow warrior saints as a body supplying the needs of every other part of the body (1 Cor 12:12–31).
12. We cannot enter into alliances until we are acquainted with the designs of our neighbors.
Comment: The spiritual warrior must never make alliances with YHVH’s enemies. Every time ancient Israel did this, they were defeated. There can be no compromise with evil or anything that goes against the Word or will of Elohim. To be unequally yoked with unbelievers is to court spiritual disaster (2 Cor 6:11–18).
13. We are not fit to lead an army on the march unless we are familiar with the face of the country— its mountains and forests, its pitfalls and precipices, its marshes and swamps.
Comment: A spiritual road map to guide us through unfamiliar or enemy territory is essential. Without a map, the battle will be at least confusing and demoralizing to the spiritual warrior if not disastrous. The Word of Elohim, the leading of the Holy Spirit on how and when to apply the Word of Elohim along with the wise counsel of spiritual elders are the spiritual maps the warrior-saint must follow, so as not to get lost in the battle, which can lead to the enemy gaining an advantage over the saint leading to his defeat.
23. The Book of Army Management says: On the field of battle, the spoken word does not carry far enough: hence the institution of gongs and drums. Nor can ordinary objects be seen clearly enough: hence the institution of banners and flags.
24. Gongs and drums, banners and flags, are means whereby the ears and eyes of the host may be focused on one particular point.
Comment: Communication between YHVH’s spiritual warriors, their leaders and YHVH himself is essential to maintain a coordinated attack. Elohim is not the author of confusion. Again, the spiritual body of Yeshua must act like a physical body by working together in perfect harmony as Paul discusses in 1 Corinthians 14.
25. The host thus forming a single united body, is it impossible either for the brave to advance alone, or for the cowardly to retreat alone. This is the art of handling large masses of men.
Comment: Unity along with zeal and a sense of purpose among members of the spiritual body of Yeshua is essential to winning spiritual battles.

VIII. VARIATION IN TACTICS
3. There are roads which must not be followed, armies which must be not attacked, towns which must be besieged, positions which must not be contested, commands of the sovereign which must not be obeyed.
Comment: The spiritual warrior chooses his battles carefully. He fights only those battles YHVH tells him to fight. To fight one’s own personal (ego-oriented) battles can invite defeat. Moeover, don’t feel the need to fight every battle. This is impossible to do. No one has the strength, ability or resources to fight every battle with which one is confronted. Some battles are best fought at a later time when the enemy is weaker or we are stronger, or by others who are more able and better equipped to do so.
11. All armies prefer high ground to low and sunny places to dark.
Comment: The spiritual warrior must always stay firmly planted on the highest, moral and spiritual ground. He must never compromise this positions for anything. YHVH’s divinely revealed truth is the ultimate weapon in the saint’s arsenal. The enemy hates YHVH’s truth, for it will eventually judge him and bring him and his ungodly actions to account before the Almighty and Judge of the universe. The enemy doesn’t want to be reminded of this and the thought of it shakes him to the core — never mind the words of bravado, mocking, and scorning he may utter to the contrary. His words belie the true state of his soul. The spiritual warrior must never back down from proclaiming the truth of Elohim the pinnacle of which is the gospel message and whose foundation is YHVH’s holy Torah — his instructions, teachings and precepts in righteousness by which YHVH’s enemies are defeated and the spiritual warrior gains the victory.
