- JONATHAN CAHN- Jewish Mysticism / Extra-Biblical Sources/ Prophetic Fraud/ And Revealer of Bogus Mysteries
Despite Mr. Cahn's claims of calling himself a Rabbi, he actually in the academic sense is not. Mr. Cahn has a bachelor's degree in History from Purchase University which is affiliated with SUNY in New York (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jonathan_Cahn). He never has claimed attending a Rabbinical College. He never has provided any documentation/degree from any Jewish Theological Seminary as proof that he has successfully completed the Academic Disciplines or requirements to be officially ordained as a Rabbi(SMICHA). Furthermore, he has never provided any evidence that he completed an internship under a licensed Rabbi before being officially ordained as one. The following is the basic academic requirements for becoming a Rabbi: You'll need lots and lots of schooling to become a rabbi. Typically, it takes five years to get a Master's degree in rabbinical studies. You need to be an expert in the Hebrew language, Jewish law, Jewish history, the Bible, the Talmud, liturgy, Jewish teaching methods, counseling, Jewish literature, ethics, Israel, Jewish philosophy, and pretty much all things Jewish. The following is an excerpt taken from David H. Stern's Jewish N.T. commentary and I quote:
" A MESSIANIC JEWISH CONGREGATIONAL LEADER WHO ACCEPTS THE TITLE "RABBI" WITHOUT HAVING TRAINING ADEQUATE TO QUALIFY HIM AS A RABBI IN A NON-MESSIANIC JEWISH SETTING IS ACCEPTING HONOR WHICH HE HAS NOT EARNED AND TO WHICH HE IS NOT ENTITLED; AND THIS DOES VIOLATE YESHUA'S(JESUS) INJUNCTION UNDER MATHEW 23:8-10. SHOULD A MESSIANIC RABBI HAVE A S' MIKHAH(ORDINATION)? IF SO , SHOULD IT BE MESSIANIC OR NON-MESSIANIC? IF MESSIANIC, WHO IS QUALIFIED TO GRANT IT? MESSIANIC JUDAISM AT PRESENT HAS VERY FEW ORDAINED RABBIS AND NO ACCREDITING AGENCY. AT PRESENT, IN ORDER NOT TO EMBARASS THE MESSIANIC JEWISH MOVEMENT, I URGE LEADERS WITHOUT RABBINIC TRAINING TO RESIST CALLING THEMSELVES RABBIS" pages 68-69 end of quote.
Dear viewer: The next time you hear one of these religious charlatans on their tv talk show address Mr. Cahn as Rabbi, keep in mind it's all a GIMMICK & they are lying right before your face!
DEAR VIEWER: I AM A FORMER MEMBER OF PASTOR JONATHAN CAHN'S CHURCH BETH ISRAEL. I UNFORTUNATELY DEFECTED FROM HIS CHURCH BECAUSE AFTER MANY YEARS WHILE SITTING UNDER HIS TEACHINGS/SERMONS I REALIZED THERE EXIST SERIOUS ERRONEOUS DOCTRINES REVOLVING AROUND HIS APOLOGETICS. THE BEST WAY I CAN DEFINE HIS APOLOGETICS STYLE IS AS FOLLOWS; MR. CAHN TAKES HISTORICAL OR PROPHETIC EVENTS WHETHER BIBLICAL OR CURRENT, AND BLENDS IT WITH JEWISH MYSTICISM WHILE INTERPRETING IT WITH AN EISEGETICAL APPROACH THAT CORRESPONDS TO HIS OWN VERSION OF HERMENUETICS. THROUGH THIS METHOD, MR. CAHN INTERPRETS HIS ANCIENT MYSTERIES ACCORDING TO HIS OWN IDEAS, BIASES OR THE LIKE RATHER THAN WHAT THE ORIGINAL BIBLICAL AUTHORS INTENDED TO CONVEY TO THEIR AUDIENCE. HIS
MR. CAHN HAS SEEDED THE CHURCH WITH KABBALISTIC INFLUENCES THROUGH THE ZOHAR AND THE BABYLONIAN TALMUD BY HIS SERMONS AND BOOKS, DESIGNED TO PEAK THE INNATE CURIOSITY OF THE MIND OF HIS HEARERS/FOLLOWERS WITH SUCH TERMS AS ANCIENT MYSTERIES. THESE TERMS ARE CLASSIC NEW AGE EXPRESSIONS WHICH HAVE BEEN USED FOR CENTURIES BY ALL OCCULT GROUPS OF FREEMASONRY, THEOSOPHY AND NEW AGE RABBINICAL SAGES FROM THE JUDAIC BRANCH OF KABBALAH. CHRISTIAN MEDIA IS BEING INUNDATED WITH TEACHINGS AND BOOKS THAT CONTAIN CODE WORDS IN THEIR TITLES,CHAPTER HEADINGS AND TEXTS THAT ARE DESIGNED TO ATTRACT GULLIBLE CHRISTIANS TO SEEK SECRET KNOWLEDGE THAT IS LATENT IN THE HUMAN RACE. WORDS SUCH AS MYSTICAL THINGS, PARADIGM, BLUEPRINT, ANCIENT WISDOM, BOOK OF MYSTERIES, DECODING SECRET CODES, UNLOCKING MYSTERIES, HIDDEN KEYS THAT UNLOCK DOORS, YOUR DESTINY, AND HARBINGER; THESE ARE THE BOOKS THAT ARE BECOMING NY TIMES BESTSELLERS IN TODAY'S CHRISTIAN MARKET.
NEW AGE TEACHINGS OF FALSE SCIENCE HAVE BEEN MAKING STEADY INROADS INTO THE CHURCH FOR YEARS THROUGH BOOKS LIKE QUANTUM FAITH, QUANTUM SPIRITUALITY, THE PHYSICS OF HEAVEN AND MORE RECENTLY JONATHAN CAHN'S BOOK THE PARADIGM WHICH MR. CAHN CLAIMS TO BE A BLUEPRINT OF MYSTERIES CONNECTING PAST AND PRESENT EVENTS. EVEN THE SO CALLED SCIENCE OF KABBALAH IS SAID TO CONTAIN THE ANCIENT BLUEPRINT THAT REVEALS THE SECRETS OF THE UNIVERSE. WHAT IS NOT WIDELY UNDERSTOOD BY THE BODY OF CHRIST, IS THAT THE ROOT OF EVERY NEW CONCEPT AND TERMS/EXPRESSIONS CAN BE TRACED BACK TO ANCIENT BABYLONIAN MYSTICISM AND KABBALISTIC WRITINGS, ESPECIALLY IN THE AREA OF OCCULT SCIENCE. MORE IMPORTANTLY THESE SEED-WORDS ARE THE LANGUAGE AND BUILDING BLOCKS OF SATAN'S COUNTERFEIT KINGDOM ON EARTH THROUGH THE ANTI-CHRIST AND THE BLUEPRINT FOR THE UNIVERSAL END TIME RELIGION KNOWN AS MYSTERY BABYLON AS DESCRIBED IN THE BOOK OF REVELATION.
THIS BLOG WHICH I CREATED NEARLY 5 YEARS AGO HAS SOUGHT TO ADDRESS SOME OF THOSE ISSUES. BELOW I AM SHARING THESE ARTICLES, LINKS,VIDEOS, AND SUGGESTED BOOK BY MS. DeANNE LOPER TO READ BECAUSE I SINCERELY BELIEVE THAT THESE SO CALLED PROPHECIES/MYSTERIES BY JONATHAN CAHN CONTAINED IN HIS BOOKS ARE NOTHING MORE THAN AN ELABORATE FABRICATION BASED UPON THE EVIDENCE PRESENTED. KEEP IN MIND THAT GOD DOES NOT VALIDATE THE WORK/WORDS OF FALSE PROPHETS.
DO YOU EVER WONDER WHY JONATHAN CAHN'S NEW BOOK THE ORACLE MAKES THE FOLLOWING STATEMENT/CLAIMS:
- Is there an exact biblical template that foreordained events which will take place in our modern times and gives the exact years and even dates when they will transpire?
- Could this ancient revelation pinpoint the events of our times down to the year, month, and day of their occurring?
- Could a mysterious phenomenon be manifesting on the world stage on an exact timetable determined from ancient times?
IN THE 1ST VIDEO BELOW JONATHAN CAHN MAKES AN APPEARANCE WITH SID ROTH'S TALK SHOW "IT'S SUPERNATURAL" TO DISCUSS HIS NEW BOOK THE ORACLE. IT IS MORE THAN AN HOUR LONG BUT WE WILL GO DIRECTLY TO THE POINTS I'M TRYING TO MAKE AND CUT THROUGH THE CHASE.
FAST FORWARD TO TIME FRAMES 12 MINUTES AND 12 SECONDS. YOU WILL SEE AND HEAR MR. CAHN DESCRIBE ONE OF THE ORACLES(MARK TWAIN) BY UTILIZING THE TERMINOLOGY/EXPRESSION AS MYSTICAL THINGS OR EVENTS TAKING PLACE AMONG THE JEWS IN JERUSALEM AND ISRAEL AS THEY READ THE PARASHAH WHICH IS A PORTION READ FROM THE TORAH IN THE SYNAGOGUE ON THE SABBATH, FESTIVAL OR DAYS OF FASTING. ALSO AS YOU ADVANCE TO FRAMES BETWEEN 14-16 MINUTES, JONATHAN CAHN DISCUSSES THE JUBILEAN CODE. HE DISCUSSES THE REBIRTH OF THE NATION OF ISRAEL IN 1948 AND HOW HE APPLIED A JEWISH NUMERICAL SYSTEM KNOWN AS GEMATRIA /NUMEROLOGY TO ARRIVE AT THAT PARTICULAR DATE UNDER DISCUSSION. SIMPLY PUT IT IS THE INTERPRETATION OF A HEBREW WORD ACCORDING TO THE NUMERICAL EQUIVALENT OF IT'S LETTERS. IT IS LARGELY USED IN JEWISH TEXTS . THE TERM GEMATRIA AND IT'S PRACTICE FOR INTERPRETING SCRIPTURE DOES NOT APPEAR IN THE HEBREW BIBLE NOR IT'S PRACTICE ENDORSED BY GOD HIMSELF. WHY? BECAUSE IT IS DIVINATION!

The Babylonian king Sargon II, in 8th century BC, is believed to have been the first to use gematria when building the wall of Khorsabad exactly 16,283 cubits long, because that was the numerical value of his name.
It is an extra-Biblical means of trying to uncover occult (hidden) things in Scripture by means of assigning numbers to letters. It is used mainly in the BabylonianTalmud which is a record of rabbinical writings and opinions. It is not in the Bible. There is some symbolism to numbers in the Bible-- 3=God, 5=Grace, 6 = man, 7= perfection, 12=government, etc ... but that is a far cry from what those who practice gematria do. In fact gematria is closely connected to the occult practices of the Jewish Mystics of Kabbalah.
Personally, I do not believe there are "codes" in the bible. God made plain that which He wishes us to know, and reserved under wraps that which He didn't. Yes, there are symbolic passages in Scripture which man cannot decipher properly until the events which they symbolize take place. But that just confirms that God had everything planned from the beginning. It was not ever meant to be some spiritual or intellectual exercise in uncovering the secret things of God.
"For whoever does these things is detestable to the LORD; and because of these detestable things the LORD your God will drive them out before you. "You shall be blameless before the LORD your God. "For those nations, which you shall dispossess, listen to those who practice witchcraft and to diviners, but as for you, the LORD your God has not allowed you to do so".
God does not call us to search for secret meanings, hidden messages, and codes in the Bible. There is more than enough truth in the words and meanings of Scripture to meet all our needs and make us “complete and thoroughly equipped for every good work” (2 Timothy 3:16-17).
According to biblical law, the Jubilee is only observed when all twelve tribes of the Jewish nation are living in Israel, as is derived from the verse, “And you shall sanctify the fiftieth year, and proclaim freedom throughout the land for all who live on it,” which implies that the Jubilee is only sanctified when “all who live on it”—meaning, all who are meant to be living there—are in the Land of Israel. Furthermore, the Jubilee is only observed when every tribe is living in the specific part of the land which it was allotted when the Land of Israel was divided. However, some are of the opinion that the Jubilee is observed as long as there is a partial representation of each tribe, even if most of the tribe is not in Israel.
In the 6th century BCE, the Assyrians conquered the Northern Kingdom of Israel and sent the majority of its population into exile. Those who were deported are historically known as the Ten Lost Tribes.
We are certain that before that point in time the Jubilee was regularly observed. We also know that, with the destruction of the Second Temple and the disbandment of the Sanhedrin (supreme rabbinical court), the Jews ceased to mark the Jubilee year in any form. The periods about which there is a question are the remaining years between the exile of the Ten Tribes and the destruction of the First Temple, and the Second Temple Era.
According to the opinion that partial representation of each tribe is sufficient to fulfill the scriptural requirement, biblically mandated Jubilees were fully observed throughout the periods in question, because there remained a small representation of each tribe in Israel.
However, according to the first opinion mentioned above, with the exile of the Northern Kingdom the required condition for the Jubilee to be sanctified was lost. Thus, the last time there was a biblical requirement to observe the Jubilee was about 150 years before the destruction of the First Temple.
The question remains, however, whether according to this opinion Jubilee years were designated or observed during this time by rabbinic injunction. This is the subject of debate among rabbinical sages.
As mentioned above, though, today the Jubilee year is neither designated nor observed.
One more commentary to supplement the above discussion:
Someone once said that 2017 was to be the next Jubilee year and that an ancient rabbinical prophecy says the Millennial Kingdom will begin at that time. This idea stems from a prophecy by Rabbi Judah ben Samuel in 1217 that the Messianic Kingdom would begin in 2017. It was apparently based on calculations he had made of the number of Jubilee years that would pass before the Lord’s return.
The last time this was literally the case was when the Assyrians conquered the Northern Kingdom in 721BC. It appears that the Jubilee was calculated until the time of the 2nd Temple’s destruction, but it had ceased to be observed long before. Since then it has ceased to be recognized in any form.
Also a difference of interpretation has arisen as to the method of counting. The result of all this is today no one knows for certain when the next Jubilee year could occur even if the conditions for its observance could be met.
Finally, most scholars agree that the Millennial Kingdom could not begin in 2017 since Daniel’s 70th Week, a seven year period of time during which the end times judgments will take place, has not yet begun.
So what is my point? According to the book The Oracle, Mr. Cahn's thesis of the Jubilean Mysteries is all a hoax because the last time a 50th year Jubilee was officially celebrated in Judea has been as late as the year 121-122 BCE. Meaning; in order for Mr. Cahn's so called Jubilean Mysteries to be valid the Jews in Israel must meet the biblical criteria for celebrating the Jubilee Year as described above.
The Jubilean Mysteries has no correlation whatsoever to End Time Prophecy or Mysteries. It is just a scam designed to lure Christians who are biblically illiterate to purchase this book and believe these bogus mysteries. See the following link for further study and verification:
The lesson
- The Bible is sufficient. Stop chasing after prophecies, mysteries and prophetic frauds like Jonathan Cahn. Stop buying for yourselves false prophets who are making a living by prophelying. Stop buying books that supposedly “unlock secrets” and “reveal mysteries” and all of that gobbledegook. God doesn’t hide things in the Bible. The Bible is God’s revelation of Himself to man. Hiding things in His revelation kind of defeats the purpose, don’t you think?
- If someone says they’ve discovered something in the Scriptures that no one else in 2 thousand years has discovered, they’re wrong and trying to sell you something – each and every last and lousy time. Bank on it.
- Interpreting omens, using gematria/numerology and looking at signs is not Christianity – it is occultic.
- The only reason evangelicals fell for Cahn’s BOGUS MYSTERIES is because we collectively have the Biblical understanding of second graders

In the last chapter of [ The Harbinger ], Kaplan explains to Goren how he figured out the meaning of his personal clay seal.... Between the last sentence in the quote below and what can be seen from the titles above, the real mystery of The Harbinger may be that its foundation is actually Jewish mysticism:
[Kaplan] "The writing on the seal was in a language I had never seen before. But I remembered the words of The Prophet that day we first met on the bench, when he took the seal to examine it. He said it was Hebrew, but a different form of Hebrew-Paleo-Hebrew, an older version."
[Goren] "And did you know anybody who could read Paleo-Hebrew?"
[Kaplan] "No. But I knew someone who studied Hebrew from biblical and rabbinical writings. I looked up the Paleo-Hebrew alphabet, then transcribed each of the letters into its modern Hebrew equivalent. Then I made a trip to Brooklyn. That's where my friend was, an Orthodox Jewish man who ran a little bookstore, in back of which was a study, a library of all sorts of mystical Hebrew writings. That was his passion-finding meaning in mystical Hebrew literature."
The introduction of Jewish mystical writings into the storyline of The Harbinger is very problematic, and one has to wonder why Cahn would have done this.
Mysticism and mystical experiences have been a part of Judaism since the earliest days. . . . The mystical school of thought came to be known as Kabbalah, from the Hebrew root Qof-Beit-Lamed, meaning "to receive, to accept." The word is usually translated as "tradition."
"Kabbalah" is a doctrine of esoteric knowledge concerning God and the universe, asserted to have come down as a revelation to the Sages from a remote past, and preserved only by a privileged few. Kabbalah is considered part of the Jewish Oral Law. It is the traditional mystical understanding of the Torah.... Kabbalah includes the understanding of the spiritual spheres in creation, and the rules and ways by which God administers the existence of the Universe.
Most forms of Kabbalah teach that every letter, word, number, and accent of scripture contains a hidden sense; and it teaches the methods of interpretation for ascertaining these occult meanings.
That Cahn would include this reference to Jewish mysticism in the book is not necessarily an anomaly. Cahn gave a message at his church that also included detailed references to mystical writings, titled "Gulgatah: The Cosmic Skull: The Rabbinic Mysteries V."
A segment from near the end of this message was uploaded to YouTube on February 25, 2010, titled "The Zohar Speaks." The following description accompanies the video: "Something never before revealed , to the glory of Messiah! The Cosmic Skull, the mercy of God, and the hidden and mystical writings of the Rabbis that point to Messiah." The description coincides exactly with the overall trajectory of Cahn's messages, and that of The Harbinger , which is to reveal to the world mysteries that have been hidden until he discovers and proclaims them.
The Judaism 101 website notes the following:
In the middle ages, many of these mystical teachings were committed to writing in books like the Zohar. Many of these writings were asserted to be secret ancient writings or compilations of secret ancient writings.
Even though he introduces the Zohar as a "hostile witness," the way Cahn describes its teachings gives the impression that he views the Zohar as being a credible source of truth:
Incredible thing. Blew me away. I found it in the mystical Jewish writings of the Zohar. Something I never heard mentioned anywhere, ever. . . . The Zohar speaks, the rabbis are writing of the redemption of the world with Messiah's coming. They speak of life from the dead. They speak of resurrection, the redemption of the world. . . .They say it all will come, the power of all this, the miracle of all this will come from a sacred thing, a sacred place. And this place, this thing, is where all the mercy of God is stored. All the mercy of God pours
"God just puts it in." In other words, God inspired the rabbis to write about redemption coming from a skull , yet they had no idea what it meant. So, in this message Cahn presents concepts that are reflected in The Harbinger . The first is that Isaiah:9:10 contains a mystery that no one has seen before-Cahn has discovered it for the very first time-just as he has discovered this inspired message in the ancient rabbinic writings. The second is that Tom Daschle was inspired by God to proclaim America's defiance and thus set up the nation for judgment-even though he didn't know what he was doing-just as is true of the ancient rabbis.
As Cahn continues his exposition of the Zohar, the mystical nature of his thinking becomes even more clear. And once again he notes that perhaps no one has ever said the words he has just uttered:
What stuff? Ancient mystical writings . Even more telling, Cahn confidently elevates the rabbis to the level of Moses and Daniel:
The death of Messiah-all pinpointed in time and space. Moses zeroed in on the day. Passover. He dies on the day that the lamb is killed. The prophets-Daniel zeroes in on the time period, mathematically, before 70 A.D. Daniel-those seventy sevens. The rabbis in the book of Moed, unwittingly, and another thing we shared this [ sic ], zeroed in on the year by saying that the cosmic change all took place in the year 30 A.D. . . . And now the very hill, the very place, here in, of all places, the rabbinical writings, the Zohar. . . . you want mercy, you go there. Listen to the rabbis on this point. . . .
How can a pastor instruct his congregation to "listen to the rabbis" who produced the Zohar and tell them these rabbis were inspired by God? The Zohar is not simply an innocuous source of information-it is an extrabiblical guide to "higher spirituality." It is mystical. It is occultic.
The Zohar cannot be understood and felt directly, but requires preconception of spirituality, before one approaches the book. The greatest Kabbalist of our time-Rabbi Yehuda Ashlag (Baal HaSulam)-wrote introductions to The Zohar precisely to guide one's approach to this profound book....
Such articles cultivate one's spiritual qualities to perceive the Higher reality. Additionally, these texts provide knowledge of how to approach certain terms, phrases, and concepts in The Zohar, to maximize its use as a guide for spiritual attainment, avoiding being lost in materialized depictions that the human mind is prone to form.
Cahn [has since] tried to justify his practice by noting that the Apostle Paul also referred to the teaching of pagan philosophers in his address to the Athenians (Acts:17:22-31
). He went on to suggest that Paul would have been "crucified" by discernment ministries for using a hymn to Zeus, and because of his associations.
That is a red herring.... Paul's approach is nothing like Cahn's. Cahn refers to the mystical rabbinical writings positively , saying that because God had inspired them his church should "listen to the rabbis." He presents the Zohar as something that can be studied and its depths plumbed for hidden mysteries like he has just revealed.
In stark contrast, Paul immediately tells his audience that what they have been taught by their poets about the unknown god...is completely wrong . He does not suggest that their sayings contain hidden mysteries that were inspired by God.... Paul never implies that the Athenians should listen to these men. Rather he refers to a single point of agreement (we all come from God) to denounce their idols. From Romans we understand that the knowledge of that truth is not a hidden mystery, but has rather been made plain to everyone through both the conscience and the Creation (Romans:1:18-2:16).
Unfortunately, this treatment of the rabbinic material is consistent with Cahn's frequent practice of "discovering and revealing" hidden mysteries-be it in the Bible or in extrabiblical Jewish writings like the Talmud or even in kabbalistic writings like the Zohar.
Have untold numbers of Christians unwittingly accepted mystical Jewish thought? And after having done so, how many pastors, teachers, and other ministry leaders have preached messages connected to the claims of The Harbinger and have publicly endorsed, promoted, and defended the book and Jonathan Cahn? How many have shared this book and the documentary with unbelieving family and friends? How many millions of dollars have gone into keeping The Harbinger on so many best-seller lists?
Scripture frequently describes God as one who knows all things, even that which the human mind could never know or finds incomprehensible. Thus he sees the secret intentions of human hearts ( Psalms 139:1-4 Psalms 139:23 ; Matt 6:4-6 ; Rom 2:16 ; 1 Cor 4:5 ; 14:25 ; Heb 4:13 ), comprehends the seemingly unfathomable mysteries of the universe ( Job 38:1-39:30 ), and, most important, understands the meaning of human history.
God understands human history because the events that comprise it correspond with his own intentions: he wills all that happens, and does so to accomplish his own purpose ( Dan 2:37 ; 5:21 ; Rom 11:25-36 ). People, on the other hand, both because of their sin and because of their human limitations, remain ignorant of God's purpose when left to their own reckoning ( Daniel 2:27 Daniel 2:30 ; Mark 4:10-12 ; Luke 19:41-44 ). God graciously responds to this human inadequacy by revealing his purpose to his people. When God's purpose is revealed in this way, the Bible frequently refers to it as a "mystery."
The content of the divine mystery is painted in broad strokes in the Old Testament, takes on greater detail in the Gospels, and receives its finishing touches in Paul's letters. In Daniel, where the term first appears (raz in Aramaic, always translated with mysterion [musthvrion] in the LXX), it refers to God's understanding of the symbols in Nebuchadnezzar's dream, symbols that stand for the rise and fall of human empires and to the eventual establishment of God's own, eternal kingdom ( 2:44 ; cf. Rev 1:20 ; Revelation 17:5 Revelation 17:7 ). The details of these events, however, and the nature of God's kingdom, once established, remain sketchy in Daniel. The mystery of God's purposes gains greater specificity in the Gospels, where Jesus, particularly in his parables, reveals the "mystery of the kingdom of God" ( Mark 4:11 ; cf. Matt 13:11 ; Luke 8:10 ). Paul also identifies the divine mystery with the revelation of God in Christ ( Col 2:2 ; 4:3 ) but gives the concept even greater clarity in three ways.
First, he equates the divine mystery with the gospel of Christ's atoning death on the cross ( 1 Cor 2:1 ); second, he describes it as God's plan, through Christ's atoning death ( Eph 2:13-16 ), to include the Gentiles among his chosen people; and third, he defines it as the reconciliation of all things to God ( Eph 1:9-10 ). Thus, Daniel described the divine mystery in general terms as the eventual establishment of God's eternal kingdom; Jesus defined it more specifically as his proclamation of God's kingdom; and Paul described it more specifically still as the constitution of a new people, from among both Jews and Gentiles, through the atoning death of Christ on the cross.
This understanding of divine mystery illustrates three aspects of God's character. First, it emphasizes God's omniscience. After God revealed the "mystery" of the interpretation of Nebuchadnezzar's dream to Daniel, Daniel thanked God in prayer for his wisdom and power ( 2:23 ; cf. 2:20 ) and described him as a God who "knows what lies in darkness" ( 2:22 ). Paul, similarly, after revealing the mystery of God's plan to include the Gentiles among his chosen people breaks into praise of the "depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God" ( Rom 11:33 ).
Second, the biblical concept of divine mystery emphasizes God's sovereignty. The mystery revealed to Daniel and communicated to the king demonstrates not only that God knows the beginning of history from its end but that the rise and fall of human empires and the establishment of God's own kingdom happen according to his decree ( 2:36 ). Similarly, Paul says that the mystery of God's intention to unite both Jews and Gentiles in the body of Christ has been in place from ages past ( Eph 3:9-11 ; Col 1:26-27 ; cf. Eph 1:9-10 ; 3:5 ).
Third, and most important, the biblical understanding of divine mystery emphasizes God's grace. This can be seen immediately in the stark contrast between the biblical use of the term "mystery" and its use as a technical term in ancient Hellenistic mystery religions. In these cults the term was used to signify the esoteric knowledge that initiates were instructed, with threats of severe punishment, not to reveal to the uninitiated. The Bible, however, emphasizes God's gracious willingness to reveal the mystery of his purposes to his servants the prophets and through them to other people ( Rev 10:7 ; cf. Amos 3:7 ). The biblical emphasis is well illustrated in Daniel. There God graciously reveals his mysteries to Daniel to save him from the king's cruel sentence of death upon the royal wise men for their inability to interpret the king's dream ( 2:16-19 ). Because Daniel recognizes the graciousness of God's response, he is quick to acknowledge before the king that the dream's interpretation has come from God, not from Daniel's abilities as a counselor ( Daniel 2:27 Daniel 2:30 ). Similarly, Jesus graciously explains the parable of the sower to his disciples with the comment that, although the parables baffle those on the outside, the mystery of the kingdom of God has been given to them ( Matt 11:25-26 ).
In Paul's letters this aspect of the mystery of God comes to a climax. Paul points his readers again and again to the unique position they occupy as those who have experienced the fulfillment of the mystery of God's purposes. Although predicted in the Scriptures, the mystery was kept silent for long ages ( Rom 16:25-26 ), hidden for generations past ( Col 1:26 ; cf. Ephesians 3:5 Ephesians 3:9 Ephesians 3:11 ) that it might be revealed to apostles and prophets such as Paul himself and through them to believers ( Eph 3:1-12 ; cf. 1 Peter 1:10-12 ). Paul describes his calling to reveal the mystery of God to the Gentiles as "the grace of God given to me for you" ( Eph 3:2 ), and a few verses later, in a magnificent piling up of the language of grace, he identifies it as "the gift of the grace which God gave to me according to his effective power" (v. 7).
The biblical idea of mystery, then, reminds Christians that God holds the course of human events in his hands and has so shaped them that they work for the salvation of his people. It also demonstrates the graciousness of God in revealing his redemptive purposes to prophets and apostles and, through them, to all who are willing to hear.
Conclusion:
According to the Sacred Text, the usage of MYSTERY is not a puzzle or a secret knowledge or wisdom that leaves a person in ignorance, but a truth that God reveals to man. It usually refers to something that man would not normally know, but that God in his grace makes known to him cf: Ephesians 3:4-5, Col 1:26, Rev 17:17.
They are secret counsels which govern God in dealing with the righteous, which are hidden from ungodly and wicked men but plain to the godly.
