Kristi Burke's Religious Trauma eventually led her to become an Atheist. The following is an excerpt from her blog April 26, 2021:
TEN YEARS EARLIER
I was slumped in shock in the living room of my home. Twelve familiar faces were circling around me, intervention style. Their eyes were burning through me—Bibles at their sides, with hands clinging to tissues. I was nineteen at the time, but I was still a child to them. These faces were heavy with disappointment, and they were taking turns letting me know just that.
They were there to bring me back to god. They believed that he had given them the authority to do just that. They felt that because I was partying on the weekends, exploring my sexuality, and questioning my faith, I was being pulled under Satan's evil grip. Each one took a self-righteous moment to let the judgment and shame roll off their tongues, spilling out and spreading around me like toxic sludge.
This was when they revealed that they had been watching my every move for quite some time. They had been illegally tracking my digital activity and communications. They installed a key logger program on my computer and phone that gave themfull access to my life, even the most secret and private moments. They printed what they considered to be the worst of it, gripping to a stack in their laps as they shamed me for what was inside them. I had never felt such a deep violation of privacy before that moment. I felt humiliated and small and confused.
As the night progressed and they didn't get the response they hoped for, I was physically detained and prayed over, accused of things I didn't do, held against my will, and even threatened by a grown man with a closed fist. They took my computer and car keys, and an attempt was made to conceal my phone; they didn't want to give me the opportunity to call someone to pick me up. There was a moment that night when I felt so terrified that I fell to the floor and felt that familiar weakening feeling: racing heart, numb face, tight lungs, a panic-induced asthma attack. I was given an inhaler, but not before furious purple faces hurled their rage, accusing me of faking it entirely. Thankfully, within a few hours, I managed to get the hell out. Continuing with her article Mrs. Burke makes the following recommendations to her viewers( there are several but I just selected this one in order to expose the dark side of her persona):
#5) Find your identity. Discover what makes you happy, especially if the church forbade it. Watch dirty movies, read raunchy books, date around, do shrooms in the forest, rock some heavy cleavage- whatever makes you happy and allows your freak flag to fly high (please do this responsibly. We just want to heal and live our truth the best way we know how. We can play with our fears because they no longer rule us. In her own words she unwittingly admits that she doesn't have any scruples when it comes to encouraging her readers to indulge in shameful sinful acts i.e. like doing lap dances to Satan and smoking magic mushrooms in the woods when no one is around, watching pornographic movies, read pornographic books; and among other things she mentions in the two previous paragraphs above. The only people you find doing lap dances are the LYING SLUTS you find in WHORE HOUSES BECAUSE THAT'S HOW THEY MAKE A LIVING OUT OF IT! Anyone who encourages their readers to indulge in these abominations definitely does not have any decent moral values. ON THE CONTRARY THEY ARE MORALLY BANKRUPT.

Christianophobia is on the rise like never before especially in platforms like social media. Christianophobia refers to the state of being hateful or spiteful against Christians, Christianity, and God. A Christianophobe hates or despises Christians and/or what they stand for. Many Christians on Tik Tok have filed multiple complaints against Ms. Burke for Hate Speech/Christianophobia. According to a recent video she posted on Tik Tok, her account is being reviewed for possible termination. If so she has stated she plans to come to You Tube in order to continue her Anti-Christian diatribe. She professes to be an Atheist. The statements on her video above is a gross contradiction. Because Atheist DO NOT BELIEVE THERE IS A GOD. Yet she unwittingly acknowledges God's very existence by using him as a scapegoat. Closely linked to the disillusioned are those who call themselves “atheists” when, in fact, they are anti-God. Atheist is a label some hide behind to mask a deep hatred toward God. Often due to childhood trauma or abuse in the name of religion/ Church, these people are consumed by an antipathy toward all things religious. The only way they can retaliate against a God they consider cruel is to deny Him vehemently. Events of the past have left wounds so deep that it is easier to deny the reality of God than admit that they hate Him. True atheists would not include this group in their numbers, as they recognize that to be angry with God is to acknowledge His existence. But many people do, in fact, call themselves atheists while simultaneously expressing outrage toward a God whose existence they deny.
Dear reader: Kristi Burke to the
best of my knowledge has no professional degrees or formal training
from a theological seminary. She is simply an ARTIST who likes to draw
pictures. She defected from Christianity because she was caught living habitually in sin by church officials who were keeping track of her sinful life style as a teenager.
Instead of repenting and asking God for forgiveness, she turned against

Some final thoughts:
Young Lady it's unfortunate you took a wrong detour in your life. I too am a victim of religious abuse. But I chose instead to remain faithful to my Redeemer regardless of what hardships I had to endure. Because in the end God makes all things work together for our good; for those who truly love him Romans 8:28. Take it for what it's worth or you can discard what I said. The choice is yours. But I will follow the Biblical mandate to contend for the faith Jude 1:3. You still have time. But God will not wait forever for you to make up your mind. We all have an EXPIRATION DATE STAMPED WITHIN OUR BODIES. Then judgement day will inevitably come for all of us. Then he will demand for us to account for our lives. At which point each person will receive from God eternal rewards or eternal consequences for their transgressions for abusing God's eternal love and mercy. Is that what you want Kristi?. "And just as it is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment" Hebrews 9:27.

What is the unpardonable sin / unforgivable sin?
Answer
The unpardonable/unforgivable sin or “blasphemy of the Holy Spirit” is mentioned in Mark 3:22–30 and Matthew 12:22–32. Jesus said, “Truly I tell you, people can be forgiven all their sins and every slander they utter” (Mark 3:28),
but then He gives one exception: “Whoever blasphemes against the Holy
Spirit will never be forgiven; they are guilty of an eternal sin” (verse
29).
According to Jesus, the unpardonable or unforgivable sin is unique. It
is the one iniquity that will never be forgiven (“never” is the meaning
of “either in this age or in the age to come” in Matthew 12:32).
The unforgivable sin is blasphemy (“defiant irreverence”) of the Holy
Spirit in the context of the Spirit’s work in the world through Christ.
In other words, the particular case of blasphemy seen in Matthew 12 and Mark 3
is unique. The guilty party, a group of Pharisees, had witnessed
irrefutable evidence that Jesus was working miracles in the power of the
Holy Spirit, yet they claimed that He was possessed by the prince of
demons, Beelzebul (Matthew 12:24; Mark 3:30).
The Jewish leaders of Jesus’ day committed the unpardonable sin by
accusing Jesus Christ (in person, on earth) of being demon-possessed.
They had no excuse for such an action. They were not speaking out of
ignorance or misunderstanding. The Pharisees knew that Jesus was the
Messiah sent by God to save Israel. They knew the prophecies were being
fulfilled. They saw Jesus’ wonderful works, and they heard His clear
presentation of truth. Yet they deliberately chose to deny the truth and
slander the Holy Spirit. Standing before the Light of the World,
bathed in His glory, they defiantly closed their eyes and became
willfully blind. Jesus pronounced that sin to be unforgivable.
Another unpardonable sin that can be committed against the Holy Spirit today is LYING TO THE HOLY SPIRIT cf Acts 5:1-11. And the only other unpardonable sin today is that of continued unbelief. There is no pardon
for a person who dies in his rejection of Christ. The Holy Spirit is at
work in the world, convicting the unsaved of sin, righteousness, and
judgment (John 16:8).
If a person resists that conviction and remains unrepentant, then he is
choosing hell over heaven. “Without faith it is impossible to please
God” (Hebrews 11:6), and the object of faith is Jesus (Acts 16:31). There is no forgiveness for someone who dies without faith in Christ.
Many people fear they have committed some sin that God cannot or will
not forgive (with the exception of the 2 mentioned above), and they feel there is no hope for them, no matter what
they do. Satan would like nothing more than to keep people laboring
under that misconception. God gives encouragement to the sinner who is
convicted of his sin: “Come near to God and he will come near to you” (James 4:8). “Where sin increased, grace increased all the more” (Romans 5:20). And the testimony of Paul is proof positive that God can and will save anyone who comes to Him in faith (1 Timothy 1:12–17).
If you are suffering under a load of guilt today, rest assured that you
have not committed the unpardonable sin. God is waiting with open arms.
Jesus’ promise is that “he is able to save completely those who come to
God through him” (Hebrews 7:25).
Our Lord will never fail. “Surely God is my salvation; I will trust and
not be afraid. The LORD, the LORD himself, is my strength and my
defense; he has become my salvation” (Isaiah 12:2).
God has provided for our salvation in His Son (John 3:16). Forgiveness is found exclusively in Jesus (John 14:6). To reject the only Savior is to be left with no means of salvation; to reject the only pardon is, obviously, unpardonable.
Kristi Burke goes on to say that God doesn't want mankind to acquire knowledge. She then goes on to use the Gnostics as a basis to support this fallacy. Who and what were the Gnostics? Below I expose this heretical view by Kristi Burke:
There is actually no such thing as Christian Gnosticism, because true Christianity and Gnosticism are mutually exclusive systems of belief. The principles of Gnosticism contradict what it means to be a Christian. Therefore, while some forms of Gnosticism may claim to be Christian, they are in fact decidedly non-Christian.
Gnosticism was perhaps the most dangerous heresy that threatened the early church during the first three centuries. Influenced by such philosophers as Plato, Gnosticism is based on two false premises. First, it espouses a dualism regarding spirit and matter. Gnostics assert that matter is inherently evil and spirit is good. As a result of this presupposition, Gnostics believe anything done in the body, even the grossest sin, has no meaning because real life exists in the spirit realm only.
Second, Gnostics claim to possess an elevated knowledge, a “higher truth” known only to a certain few. Gnosticism comes from the Greek word gnosis which means “to know.” Gnostics claim to possess a higher knowledge, not from the Bible, but acquired on some mystical higher plane of existence. Gnostics see themselves as a privileged class elevated above everybody else by their higher, deeper knowledge of God.
To discredit the idea of any compatibility between Christianity and Gnosticism, one has only to compare their teachings on the main doctrines of the faith.
On the matter of salvation, Gnosticism teaches that salvation is gained through the acquisition of divine knowledge which frees one from the illusions of darkness. Although they claim to follow Jesus Christ and His original teachings, Gnostics contradict Him at every turn. Jesus said nothing about salvation through knowledge, but by faith in Him as Savior from sin. “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast” (Ephesians 2:8-9). Furthermore, the salvation Christ offers is free and available to everyone (John 3:16), not just a select few who have acquired a special revelation.
Christianity asserts that there is one source of Truth and that is the Bible, the inspired, inerrant Word of the living God, the only infallible rule of faith and practice (John 17:17; 2 Timothy 3:15-17; Hebrews 4:12). It is God’s written revelation to mankind and is never superseded by man’s thoughts, ideas, writings, or visions.
The Gnostics, on the other hand, use a variety of early heretical writings known as the Gnostic gospels, a collection of forgeries claiming to be “lost books of the Bible.” Thankfully, the early church fathers were nearly unanimous in recognizing these Gnostic scrolls as fraudulent forgeries that espouse false doctrines about Jesus Christ, salvation, God, and every other crucial Christian truth. There are countless contradictions between the Gnostic “gospels” and the Bible. Even when the so-called Christian Gnostics quote from the Bible, they rewrite verses and parts of verses to harmonize with their philosophy, a practice that is strictly forbidden and warned against by Scripture (Deuteronomy 4:2; 12:32; Proverbs 30:6; Revelation 22:18-19).
The Person of Jesus Christ is another area where Christianity and Gnosticism drastically differ. The Gnostics believe that Jesus’ physical body was not real, but only “seemed” to be physical, and that His spirit descended upon Him at His baptism, but left Him just before His crucifixion. Such views destroy not only the true humanity of Jesus, but also the atonement, for Jesus must not only have been truly God, but also the truly human (and physically real) man who actually suffered and died upon the cross in order to be the acceptable substitutionary sacrifice for sin (Hebrews 2:14-17). The biblical view of Jesus affirms His complete humanity as well as His full deity.
Gnosticism is based on a mystical, intuitive, subjective, inward, emotional approach to truth which is not new at all. It is very old, going back in some form to the Garden of Eden, where Satan questioned God and the words He spoke and convinced Adam and Eve to reject them and accept a lie. He does the same thing today as he “prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour” (1 Peter 5:8). He still calls God and the Bible into question and catches in his web those who are either naïve and scripturally uninformed or who are seeking some personal revelation to make them feel special, unique, and superior to others. Let us follow the Apostle Paul who said to “test everything. Hold on to the good” (1 Thessalonians 5:21), and this we do by comparing everything to the Word of God, the only Truth.

Kristi Burke encourages her viewers to become involved in science & philosophy as opposed to anything that has to do with God and everything that he represents. But what exactly is the essence of her atheistic philosophy ? Below I provide a succinct overview of this atheistic philosophy from the book " INSIDE THE ATHEIST MIND" BY AUTHOR ANTHONY DeSTEFANO.
"Atheism is a whole system of beliefs-a system that has it's own philosophy(materialism), morality(relativism), politics(Darwinism), and culture(secularism). It even has it's own sacraments(abortion on demand, infanticide, & euthanasia). And this system of beliefs has been responsible for more death, carnage, persecution, and misery than any other system of beliefs the world has ever known" page 116.
"This same philosophy was espoused by men like Auguste Comte, Ludwig Feuerbach, Karl Marx, Friedrich Nietzsche. Not only did these atheists publicly denounce belief in God, but also shared a white hot hatred of religion and argued forcefully that it was humanity's solemn duty to destroy religious conviction altogether. To oppose this destruction, they claimed, was an act contrary to reason and historical progress. Tolerance was not part of their vocabulary. It was these atheist philophers of the 19th century who laid the ideological foundation for the atheist political leaders of the 20th century. Their intolerance for religion & religious principles set the stage for the bloodliest wars and mass murders ever to take on the stage of human history" page 57.
Men like Friedrich Nietzsche, for examaple understood that with out God there can be no fixed morality. Without a Supreme Being, there can be no Supreme Lawgiver-and hence no supreme law. This was a bold, logical, and honest way of thinking, unlike Hitchens, Dawkins, Harris, and others, the old atheists were not afraid to proclaim it.
In his famous atheist treatise, BEYOND GOOD AND EVIL, Nietzsche wrote:
"Severity, violence, slavery, danger in the streets and in the heart, secrecy, stoicism, tempter's art and develry of every kind....everthing wicked, terrible, tyrannical, predatory, and serpentine in man, serves as well for the elevation of the human species as it's opposite....Such kind of men are we, we free spirits....The noble type of man regards himself as a determiner of values....he is a creator of values".
That's what Nietzsche believed atheist should be-free spirits. Spirits who were free to do whatever they wished, once they have thrown off the shackles of religious oppression. In Nietzsche's philosophy, it is permissible to go beyond good and evil. These concepts are merely human inventions. What makes something good or evil is determined solely by whether or not it serves our own personal, practical purposes. That's why Nietzsche urged his followers to become Supermen-individuals who could understand that good and evil are artificial restrictions imposed by religion in order to prevent the strong from dominating the weak. He embraced an atheistic philosophy of social Darwinism that advocated not only survival of the fittest but also survival of the most powerful. And why not? If God doesn't exist, how can there be any kind of objective moral law to protect the weak? pages 87-88.
This lack of moral objectivity explains why there have been so many murderous atheists regimes in the past and present. If an atheist leader with absolute power wants to act cruelly, he has no binding or transcendent reason not to. Without God, objective morality cannot exist. Only God, who transcends society, can say that human beings must act this or that-or else they are breaking a law that is also transcendent. In other words, without a transcendent and Almighty Being, there can be no such thing as a transcendent or unbreakable law.
The bottom line is that an atheist may act in a virtuous manner-but not because he must. Without God, moral precepts are simply personal codes of conduct. They are tastes or opinions-and not objective imperatives that are morally binding on all people (page 89).
Their reasoning if you can call it that, is made up almost exclusively of logical fallacies. They write books of scathing attacks on God and religion that in the end prove absolutely nothing because their arguments are the most flaimsy and shallow kind imaginable. And the most flimsiest and shallowest arguments of them all is something called the strawman argument. Atheist love this type of argument and use it all the time(when you got them backed up between a rock & hard place).
The Absurdity Of Claiming To Be An Atheist

I have a classic book in front of me published in the year 1868, titled “GOD IN HISTORY and GOD IN SCIENCE,”authored by London Pastor John Cumming (1807-1881).[1] May I say kindly, there's no such thing as an atheist! Some of the world's wealthiest celebrities have the stench of Hell on them, which is where they are all going, blaspheming the very God Who is kind to them. Luke 6:35b, “...for he is kind unto the unthankful and to the evil.”

On page 139 of his book, “GOD IN HISTORY and GOD IN SCIENCE,” Pastor John Cumming makes a brilliant observation concerning professed atheists...
Atheism is folly as much as wickedness. But suffer me, before I show this, to say, that it is absolutely impossible that any man can be an atheist, in the strict sense of that word. All that any can say is this: “No spot that I have searched does reveal a God; every organization I have examined does not show traces of wisdom, goodness, and design:” but that individual cannot say; “There is no God;” because he cannot say, “I have soared to the farthest star, I have descended to the deepest mines, I have swept all space, and searched all time, and in the realms of infinite space I have not detected any traces of a God.” In other words, to be able to say, “There is no God,” you must yourself assume to be God, which is a reductio ad absurdum, an utter and a complete absurdity.

What a brilliant observation. How can any man claim to be an atheist unless he has traveled to the farthest place in the universe? The nearest star to the earth (after our own sun) is Alpha Centauri, which is 4.37 light-years away (28,200,000,000,000 miles away!). This is just one star, being the closest to earth besides our own sun, which is 93,000,000,000 miles away. My friend, the Hubble Space Telescope has discovered that there are at least 200,000,000,000 galaxies in the universe. And each of those galaxies contains BILLIONS of stars! It is anticipated that when the James Webb Telescope is launched in 2018 from NASA, that it will discover over ONE TRILLION GALAXIES!!!
The Word of God teaches that God made the stars. I love how Genesis 1:16 is written... “HE MADE THE STARS ALSO.” It's like the Bible is saying, “Oh, by the way, God also made all the stars!” Genesis 1:16, “And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also.” God is amazing, Who knows the exact number of stars that He created, and he calls them each by their own name. Amen! Psalms 147:4, “He telleth the number of the stars; he calleth them all by their names.” I have just briefly discussed the stars. The world that exists under a microscope is even more amazing, complex and a mystery to mankind. How can anyone reasonably claim to be an atheist when man hasn't even discovered what's in 90% of the earth's oceans? Pastor John Cumming is so right... For anyone to say, “There is no God!,” you must yourself assume to be God! No human being has traveled to the ends of the universe. In fact, no human being has ever even left the Milky Way Solar System. Psalms 145:3, “Great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised; and his greatness is unsearchable.”
The Cruel Absurdity Of Atheism And Communism
It is absurd for anyone to claim to be an atheist, when no man has ever left our solar system. It is absurd for anyone to claim to be an atheist, when no man has ever traveled through all time and space. Atheism and Communism have overtaken America! Although most people would deny being an atheist, they've lost their faith in God and are looking to the government to take care of them. Atheism and the death of America.
1) The Atheist is an enemy of the Lord Jesus Christ and they serve His most prolific adversary, Satan, by default. Atheism is actually a facade, a futile exercise in self-deception, why and how? Every man and every woman, having attained an age of reason, intuitively knows that our Creator exists and they intuitively know by what has been made in Nature e.g. the origin of matter – the Universe down to the complexity of the human genome; it is these supernatural forms of preliminary empirical evidence which clearly testify to the Truth that our Creator has dominion over the Universe, Time, Life, Death and Eternity; therefore, the Atheist is “without excuse.” For all intents and purposes, there is no difference between the loyalty of the Atheist and the Satanist, both serve Satan and both seek death in sin and death in Hell in futility. Why does God allow deception?
Answer
God’s desire is that all people repent and be saved (2 Peter 3:9). At the same time, Satan, the “father of lies” (John 8:44),
deceives the very people who need to accept the truth. “The god of this
age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the
light of the gospel of the glory of Christ” (2 Corinthians 4:4). Surely, God could stop Satan’s lies and give people a fighting chance.
The Bible presents a consistent picture of how sin and deception are
related. What’s revealed is that the way we tend to think of deceit is,
well, a bit deceived. Spiritually speaking, deception is deeper than
merely being tricked or lied to. In order to be saved, one does not need
any particular level of intelligence, philosophical ability, or wisdom (Galatians 3:28; 1 Corinthians 1:20, 26). In fact, mankind has an unfortunate habit of using increased knowledge to develop more sophisticated ways to sin.
Key to understanding spiritual deception is the fact that we often choose what we want to believe rather than what we should believe, even in the face of the evidence (Luke 16:31). “Even after Jesus had done all these miraculous signs in their presence, they still would not believe in him” (John 12:37). Notice that they would not believe Jesus, despite the miracles. Their unbelief was willful.
Eve’s
fall into sin is the earliest example of how spiritual deception works.
When the serpent asks her, “Did God really say . . . ?” Eve responds by
quoting what God had said, although she added to the command (Genesis 3:1–3). She knows what to do and what not to do. The serpent then tempts her with what she can gain by eating from the tree (Genesis 3:4–5), and she notices other attractive aspects of the fruit (Genesis 3:6). Eve was lied to, and the serpent was cunning (2 Corinthians 11:3), but she ultimately chose to disobey God, even though she knew the commandment.
When confronted with her sin, Eve said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate” (Genesis 3:13).
The original Hebrew word for “deceived” implies trickery and
craftiness. Eve was tricked, but she also had a choice in the matter.
She exercised her God-given free will to make a wrong choice, seeking
pleasure and personal promotion over what God had willed for her.
The same dynamic is at work today. Satan appeals to our natural desires
and urges us to fulfill them in ways that dishonor God. Our desire for
self-satisfaction makes Satan’s deception all the more potent.
God has sent the Savior (John 3:16), He fills the world with signs of Himself (Romans 1:20), He makes Himself available to those who seek Him (Deuteronomy 4:29), and He secures anyone who comes to Him (John 6:37). When people reject what is “clearly seen” of God (Romans 1:20),
it leads to a downward spiral of “foolish hearts” made dark (verse 21),
idolatry (verse 23), and sexual impurity (verse 24). Finally, mankind
“exchanged the truth of God for a lie” (verse 25). In other words, the
spiritual deception of mankind is the direct result of rejecting readily
apparent truth. The unbeliever has made an exchange—the truth for a
lie—and the devil is happy to facilitate the swap by presenting the
sinner with a wide array of lies from which to choose.
Anyone who resists God risks falling into spiritual deception (2 Thessalonians 2:8–10).
Nature abhors a vacuum, and the void created by the eviction of truth
will soon be filled by something less than true. Give up the truth, and
you’ll believe just about anything.
Eve didn’t sin because she was hopelessly outmatched by a demonic force,
making her do wrong when she thought she was doing right. Yes, she was
lied to, but she chose to listen to the lie. That was followed by her
longing look at what was forbidden and, finally, her taking the fruit in
hopes of a better life.
All human sin is based in human choice (1 Corinthians 10:13).
When we reject the truth, we make ourselves vulnerable to the lie.
Repeated rejection of spiritual truth brings spiritual deception as a
divine consequence.
Make no mistake about this; God often allows spiritual deception as a form of punishment for willful
sin, and in order to cultivate an awareness in our lives of how badly
we need the One who is Himself Truth, our Lord Jesus Christ (John 14:6).

What does the Bible say about self-deception?

We live in a world full of lies, and deceit comes from many sources.
There are lying spirits who lead astray (1 Timothy 4:1); there are
“evildoers and impostors” looking for dupes (2 Timothy 3:13); and,
perhaps most insidious, we have ourselves to deal with. Self-deception
is common in our fallen world.
Our own hearts are deceitful—so much so that we easily fool ourselves
(Jeremiah 17:9). Isaiah 44:20 speaks of an idolater who is misled by his
own “deluded heart.” The prophet Obadiah identifies arrogance as one of
the roots of self-deception: “The pride of your heart has deceived you”
(Obadiah 1:3). Human pride always blinds us to truth. It promises
honor, but it delivers disgrace: “Pride goes before destruction, a
haughty spirit before a fall” (Proverbs 16:18).
James 1:22 warns us against deceiving ourselves: “Do not merely listen
to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.” The
self-deception that James has in mind relates to an inappropriate
response to truth. God’s Word is meant to change us (see Psalm 119:11
and John 17:17). We can sit in church for years, listening to sermon
after sermon, but if we never allow the Word we hear preached change us,
then we are self-deceived. We can read the Bible from cover to cover,
but unless we put its commands into practice, we deceive ourselves.
Such deception is common among religious people who accumulate truth in
their minds, assuming that this is what “true religion” is all about.
But Scripture was not given merely to produce theologians; it was given
“so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good
work” (2 Timothy 3:17). Holding the truth in one’s mind is not
necessarily a character-changing quality. James 1:23–24 illustrates:
merely looking at oneself in a mirror is not necessarily an
appearance-changing experience. The mirror can tell us our hair is a
mess, but unless we get out the brush and attack the problem, the
tangles will remain.
James goes on to contrast self-deceived, “worthless” religion with “pure
and faultless” religion, giving a practical example of each. One type
of self-deception is to believe that our words do not matter: “Those who
consider themselves religious and yet do not keep a tight rein on their
tongues deceive themselves, and their religion is worthless” (James
1:26). In contrast, those who successfully avoid being self-deceived
practice true religion: “Religion that God our Father accepts as pure
and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from unspotted from the world James 1:27.
